เกิร์ลกรุปเคป็อป หมายถึงกลุ่มไอดอลหญิงล้วนของเกาหลีใต้ซึ่งมีสัดส่วนส่วนใหญ่ของอุตสาหกรรมเคป็อป เกิร์ลกรุปเกาหลีได้ช่วยในการเผยแพร่และส่งเสริมวัฒนธรรมเกาหลีทั่วโลกผ่านการแสดงความโดดเด่นและความนิยม กลุ่มรุ่นแรกจากปลายยุค 90 และต้นยุค 2000 เช่น เอส.อี.เอส., ฟิงเคิล และ เบบีวี.โอ.เอ็กซ์. ถูกอ้างถึงว่าเป็นการสร้างรากฐานเหล่านี้ในฐานะเกิร์ลกรุปหญิงล้วนที่ประสบความสำเร็จกลุ่มแรกในเกาหลีและผ่านการเข้าร่วมในกระแส ฮันรยู เวฟ แรก ในปี 2550 เป็นต้นไป กลุ่มรุ่นที่สอง เช่น เกิลส์เจเนอเรชัน,คารา, ที-อารา, วันเดอร์เกิลส์, ทูเอนีวัน, ซิสตาร์ และ เอพิงก์ ได้ฟื้นฟูเกิร์ลกรุปที่ได้รับความนิยมในประเทศเกาหลีและทั่วโลกผ่านช่วงที่สองของ ฮันรยู กลุ่มที่เริ่มต้นการเปลี่ยนแปลงของรุ่นในช่วงต้นปี 2012 เช่น เอโอเอ และ อีเอ็กซ์ไอดี ช่วยขับเคลื่อนรุ่นที่สามด้วยกลุ่มที่เดบิวต์ในปี 2012 เป็นต้นไปเช่น แบล็กพิงก์, ทไวซ์, เรดเวลเวต, จีเฟรนด์, มามามู, โมโมแลนด์ และ ไอโอไอ ที่มี ก้าวขึ้นสู่ความโดดเด่นในช่วงไม่กี่ปีที่ผ่านมาและมีส่วนทำให้เกิดความสนใจและชื่นชม เค-ป็อป อย่างกว้างขวาง

รุ่นที่ 1 นำเสนอดนตรีป็อปสไตล์ตะวันตก โดยเน้นไปที่ป็อปและฮิปฮอปเป็นหลัก[1] เอส.อี.เอส. วงกลุ่มสามที่ก่อตั้งโดยเอสเอ็มเอนเตอร์เทนเมนต์ในปี ค.ศ. 2540 โดยมีคู่แข่งคือฟิงเคิล ซึ่งเป็นเกิร์ลกรุปที่มีสมาชิก 4 คนภายใต้ดีเอสพีมีเดีย ทำให้มีฐานแฟนคลับมากขึ้น[2]
