ช่วงปลายทศวรรษ 90 มาร์เวล (Marvel) ค่ายการ์ตูนซุปเปอร์ฮีโร่ยักษ์ใหญ่ เจ้าของลิขสิทธ์คาแรคเตอร์ดังๆมากมาย ไม่ว่าจะเป็น Spider Man, Captain America, X-Men, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk ฯลฯ ตกอยู่ในภาวะขาดทุนเข้าสู่กระบวนการล้มละลาย ในทศวรรษต่อมาปี 2008 ทางมาร์เวลก็ได้สร้างภาพยนตร์ Iron Man ออกฉายและประสบผลสำเร็จ นับเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของ จักรวาลภาพยนตร์มาร์เวล (Marvel Cinematic Universe)'

กลยุทธ์ Marvel Cinematic Universe หรือที่เรียกย่อๆว่า MCU นั้น คือการผลิตภาพยนตร์ซุปเปอร์ฮีโร่หลายๆเรื่องของมาร์เวลที่มีความเกี่ยวเนื่องกัน โดยเริ่มต้นจากซุปเปอร์ฮีโร่แต่ละคน แล้วนำหลายๆคนมารวมกันในหนังอีกเรื่อง เรียกได้ว่าเป็นแฟรนไชส์ภาพยนตร์ที่ยาวมากๆแฟรนไชส์หนึ่ง โดยยังมีแผนการผลิตภาพยนตร์ในจักรวาลนี้อีกหลายเรื่อง โดยประธานบริษัท Marvel Studios ได้พูดกับ Bloomberg ว่ามีแผนสร้างภาพยนตร์จนถึงปี 2028 นอกจากการสร้างหนังแล้ว แฟรนไชส์ MCU ยังรวมถึงการสร้างซีรีส์ทางโทรทัศน์อีกหลายเรื่อง

การสร้างจักรวาลมาร์เวลขึ้นมานี้ ทำให้ยอดขายตั๋วหนังของมาร์เวลทำลายสถิติสูงสุดหลายครั้ง ยอดขายตั๋วทั่วโลกของหนัง 12 เรื่อง ทำเงินมากกว่า 8.78 พันล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ เฉพาะหนังเรื่อง The Avengers (2012) ทำรายได้ไปกว่า 1.5 พันล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ ยังไม่นับรวมยอดขายสินค้าลิขสิทธิ์จากคาแรกเตอร์ในภาพยนตร์เหล่านี้ กลยุทธ์ MCU นี้สร้างความสำเร็จให้กับมาร์เวลสตูดิโอเป็นอย่างมาก

กลยุทธ์ MCU นี้ถือว่าเป็นกลยุทธ์ชั้นเลิศตามแนวคิดของศาสตราจารย์ ไมเคิล พอร์เตอร์ เพราะมาร์เวลเลือกแข่งขันที่จะแตกต่าง (Compete to be Unique) มีระบบการทำงานที่เริ่มตั้งแต่การเขียนบท การคัดเลือกนักแสดง และทุกๆขั้นตอนการสร้างภาพยนตร์แต่ละเรื่องที่ต้องสอดคล้องต่อเนื่องกัน ผู้กำกับภาพยนตร์แต่ละเรื่องจะต้องมาพูดคุยกันเพื่อวางแผนให้ทิศทางของหนังแต่ละเรื่องสอดประสานอย่างลงตัว
