โฮแกน ได้มาเอาดีทางกีฬามวยปล้ำเมื่อเขาเริ่มค้นพบตัวเองอยากเป็นนักมวยปล้ำเมื่อเขาเล่นกีตาร์ให้กับ ไนท์คลับ ในต้นปี 1970 เขาเริ่มฝึกทักษะมวยปล้ำ และ ไปที่ญี่ปุ่นเพื่อไปฝึกหัดกับนักมวยปล้ำชื่อดังในญี่ปุ่นคือ Hiro Matsuda จากนั้นกลับมาที่ Venice Beach บ้านของเขา และเริ่มที่จะออกกำลังกาย จากนั้นไปปล้ำในสมาคมในชื่อ Sterling Golden จากนั้นก็เปลี่ยนเป็น Terry Boulder ก่อนที่จะเปลี่ยนเป็น ฮัลค์ โฮแกน ในช่วงนั้น เขามีผู้จัดการคือ "Classie" Freddie Biassie และปล้ำเป็นบทอธรรมในเวลานั้นและหลายสมาคมอิสระ

หลังจากที่เขาเสียแชมป์โลกไป เขาก็ย้ายมาอยู่สมาคม WCW อย่างรวดเร็วในปี 1994 และ โฮแกน ก็สามารถคว้า แชมป์โลก WCW ไปครอง ในศึก Bash At The Beach ปี 1996 ได้ก่อตั้ง nWo ที่มี Dennis Rodman, Kevin Nash และ Scott Hall จากนั้นก็แยกกลุ่มเป็น 2 สาขา คือ nWo แดง - ดำ และ ขาว - ดำ ซึ่ง ขาว - ดำ ก็มี Hulk Hogan, Scott Norton, Brian Adam, Vincent, Scott Steiner, Bagwell และ Giant ส่วน แดง - ดำ ก็มี Kevin Nash, Scott Hall, Sting และ Lex Luger ระหว่างนั้น นักมวยปล้ำบางคนก็มีปัญหากันเองในกลุ่ม จากนั้นก็แยกทีมกันหมด กลายเป็น nWo เหมือนเดิม โฮแกน ก็เริ่มมีคนเชียร์มากขึ้น ช่วงนั้น Lex Luger ก็กลับมาที่ WCW หลังจากพักไปนานเกือบ 2 ปี เพราะบาดเจ็บหลังจากเสียแชมป์ให้กับ โฮแกน ในศึก HogWild ปี 1997 โฮแกน ก็ได้มีโอกาสปล้ำกับ สติง ในศึก Fall Brawl ปี 1999 และ สติง ได้ร่วมมือกับ Lex Luger เพื่อนเก่าของเขาและหักหลัง โฮแกน โดยเอาไม้เบสบอลตีใส่ โฮแกน และแพ้ด้วยท่า Scorpion Death Lock ไปในที่สุด ในเวลานั้นปี 2002 วินซ์ แมคแมน ก็ได้เรียก โฮแกน กลับมาพร้อมกับ เควิน แนช และ สก็อตต์ ฮอลล์ ในนามของ nWo และไปเล่นงานทั้ง เดอะ ร็อค และ สโตน โคลด์ สตีฟ ออสติน และ โฮแกน ก็ขอท้าเจอกับ เดอะ ร็อค ในศึก เรสเซิลเมเนีย ครั้งที่ 18 และ โฮแกน ก็เป็นฝ่ายพ่ายแพ้ให้กับ เดอะ ร็อค และกลับมาเป็น โฮแกน คนเดิมอีกครั้ง
