ประวัติศาสตร์อินเดียเริ่มต้นจากข้อมูลด้านพันธุศาสตร์สมัยใหม่ที่พบว่ามนุษย์ยุคใหม่เชิงกายวิภาคได้เข้ามายังอนุทวีปอินเดียจากทวีปแอฟริกาในราว 73,000 ถึง 55,000 ปีก่อน[1] อย่างไรก็ตาม ซากมนุษย์ที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดที่เคยพบในอินเดียมีอายุราว 30,000 ปีก่อน การเปลี่ยนแปลงจากการล่าของป่าไปสู่การทำเกษตรและปศุสัตว์ของมนุษย์ในอนุทวีปอินเดียเริ่มต้นในราว 7,000 ปีก่อนคริสตกาล ในพื้นที่ที่ปัจจุบันคือเมห์รครห์พบหลักฐานแสดงการเก็บเกี่ยวข้าวสาลี ข้าวบาร์เลย์ ตามด้วยการปศุสัตว์ วัว แพะ และแกะ[2] ภายใน 4,500 ปีก่อนคริสต์ดาล การใช้ชีวิตแบบปักหลักเริ่มเป็นที่แพร่หลายขึ้น[2] และค่อย ๆ พัฒนาอย่างก้าวกระโดดเป็นอารยธรรมลุ่มแม่น้ำสินธุ หนึ่งในอารยธรรมยุคแรกของมนุษย์ในยุคโลกเก่า ซึ่งร่วมสมัยกับอียิปต์โบราณ และ เมโสโปเตเมีย อารยธรรมนี้เฟื่องฟูใน 2,500 ปีก่อนคริสตกาลถึง 1900 ปีก่อนคริสตกาล ในพื้นที่ที่ปัจจุบันคือประเทศปากีสถานและตัวนตกเฉียงเหนือของประเทศอินเดีย มีลักษณะสำคัญของอารยธรรมคือการวางผังเมือง, บ้านเรือนที่สร้างด้วยอิฐอบ และระบบประปาและการระบายน้ำที่ซับซ้อน[3]

สมัยพระเวทเป็นยุคสมัยที่ซึ่งพระเวทได้ประพันธ์ขึ้น พระเวทเป็นงานเขียนบันทึกบทขับร้องพิธีสวดของชาวอินโด-อารยัน วัฒนธรรมพระเวทนั้นแพร่หลายอยู่ในแถบตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือของอินเดียในปัจจุบัน ในขณะที่ส่วนอื่น ๆ ของอินเดียยังคงมีวัฒนธรรมเฉพาะถิ่นที่แตกต่างกันไป พระเวท ในปัจจุบันเป็นคัมภีร์ที่สักการะโดยชาวฮินดู และได้รับการถ่ายทอดแบบมุขปาถะด้วยภาษาสันสกฤตแบบพระเวท และเป็นหนึ่งในงานเขียนที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดในอนุทวีปอินเดีย[4] สมัยพระเวทกินเวลาจาก 1500 ถึง 500 ปีก่อนคริสตกาล[5][6] และมีส่วนอย่างมากต่อการเป็นรากฐานของมุมมองต่าง ๆ ทางวัฒนธรรมของอนุทวีปอินเดีย ในแง่ของวัฒนธรรม ศาสนาของอนุทวีปอินเดียได้เริ่มเปลี่ยนจากความเป็นคัลคอลิธิก สู่ยุคเหล็ก ในยุคนี้[7]

สังคมพระเวท[แก้]

นักประวัติศาสตร์เชื่อว่าวัฒนธรรมพระเวทมีศูนย์กลางอยู่แถบภูมิภาคปัญจาบและที่ราบลุ่มแม่น้ำคงคาตอนบน[7] นักประวัติศาสตร์ส่วนใหญ่เชื่อว่ายุคนี้เป็นช่วงเวลาที่ระลอกของชาวอินโด-อารยัน เริ่มเข้ามาสู่อนุทวีปอินเดียผ่านการอพยพของชาวอินโด-อารยัน จากทางตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือ[8][9] มีการสร้างความศักดิ์สิทธิ์ให้กับต้นปีปัลและวัวภายในยุคของอาถรรพเวท[10] ในขณะที่แนวคิดของปรัชญาอินเดียเริ่มพัฒนาในเวลาต่อ ๆ มา เช่น แนวคิดเรื่องธรรมพ ซึ่งสามารถค้นคว้าย้อนหลังไปถึงยุคพระเวทได้[11]

อาณาจักรไมโซร์ทางใต้ของอินเดียขยายอาณาเขตได้กว้างขวางที่สุดในสมัยของไฮเดอร์ อะลี และบุตร ตีปูสุลต่าน ในครึ่งหลังของศตวรรษที่ 18 ในสมัยนี้ อาณาจักรไมโซร์ได้มีการต่อสู้กับทั้งกองทัพบริเตนและชาวมราฐาหลายครั้ง โดยสงครามระหว่างมราฐาและไมโซร์สิ้นสุดลงในเดือนเมษายน 1787 ภายหลังการลงนามใน สนธิสัญญาคเชนทราคัท (Gajendragad) ที่ซึ่งตีปูสุลต่านต้องจ่ายธรรมเนียมชดเชยให้กับมราฐา ส่วนสงครามระหว่างอังกฤษและไมโซร์ได้เกิดขึ้นไปพร้อม ๆ กัน กระทั่งการเสียชีวิตของตีปูในสงครามครั้งที่สี่ (1798–1799) และบริเตนได้ชนะในการยึดเมืองเสริงคปัฏนัม เมื่อปี 1799

เมืองไฮเดอราบาดก่อตั้งขึ้นโดยจักรวรรดิกุตับชาฮีแห่งโกลคอนดาในปี 1591 ต่อมา นายพลโมกุล อะซิฟ จาห์ (Asif Jah) ได้ยึดไฮเดอราบาดและสถาปนาตนขึ้นเป็นนิซัมอห่งไฮเดอราบาดในปี 1724[12]
