ประวัติ

เดือนพฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2461 (ค.ศ. 1918) กอร์เนลิส ยาโกบึส ลังเงินโฮเฟิน ได้ประพันธ์บทกวีภาษาแอฟริคานส์ที่มีชื่อว่า เสียงเพรียก (Die Stem) ดนตรีประกอบบทกวีนี้ได้รับการประพันธ์โดยมาร์ตีนึส เลาเรินส์ เดอ ฟีลีเย เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2464 (ค.ศ. 1921) และได้รับความนิยมอย่างมากจากบรรษัทแพร่ภาพกระจายเสียงแอฟริกาใต้ซึ่งในช่วงพุทธทศวรรษ 2460 ได้บรรเลงเพลงนี้ในช่วงเวลาปิดสถานีของแต่ละวัน โดยบรรเลงคู่กับ "ก็อดเซฟเดอะควีน" ใช้เพลงคำนับสำหรับพิธีการที่เกี่ยวข้องกับพระมหากษัตริย์แห่งสหราชอาณาจักรในฐานะพระประมุขแห่งแอฟริกาใต้ ได้มีการขับร้องอย่างเป็นทางการครั้งแรกเมื่อวันที่ 31 พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. 2471
