Manis ("spirit") คือสกุลของลิ่น เอเชียใต้ และลิ่น เอเชียตะวันออก ลิ่นเอเชีย อยู่ในวงศ์ย่อย Maninae ซึ่งอยู่ในวงศ์ Manidae.^[5]^[6]

ลิ่นเอเชียมีทั้งหมด 8 ชนิด (ดูในตาราง) กระจายพันธุ์ไปในทวีปเอเชีย สำหรับในประเทศไทยพบ 2 ชนิด คือ ลิ่นซุนดา หรือ ลิ่นชวา (M. javanica) ที่พบได้ทั่วไปทุกภาค กับลิ่นจีน (M. pentadactyla) ที่มีรายงานการพบเพียงไม่กี่ครั้งเท่านั้น บริเวณอุทยานแห่งชาติดอยอินทนนท์ เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2483 ซึ่งมีขนาดลำตัวที่เล็กกว่า หางสั้นกว่า และมีสีที่คล้ำกว่า^[7]
