การแบ่งประเทศตามร้อยละของการให้ความสำคัญแก่ศาสนา ตามผลสำรวจของสำนักวิจัยพิว ใน พ.ศ. 2545

อศาสนา (อังกฤษ: irreligion) หมายความว่า ภาวะที่ไม่นับถือศาสนา ไม่มีศาสนา ไม่แบ่งแยกศาสนา หรือเป็นปรปักษ์ต่อศาสนา[1] ผู้ที่มีภาวะดังกล่าวเรียก อศาสนิกชน

ว่ากันตามแต่ละนิยามหรือความเข้าใจของบุคคล อศาสนาอาจเข้าได้ว่าหมายถึง อเทวนิยม (atheism), เทวนิยม (deism), อไญยนิยม (agnosticism), ศาสนวิมตินิยม (religious skepticism) หรือ โลกียมนุษยนิยม (secular humanism)

อศาสนิกชนอาจมีความเข้าใจในภาวะอศาสนาเท่า ๆ กับศาสนิกชน เช่น ผู้นับถือลัทธิมนุษยนิยมมีความเชื่ออย่างลึกซึ่งยิ่งในวัตรปฏิบัติของตนเองพอ ๆ กับความลึกซึ้งของความเชื่อที่ศาสนิกชนมีต่อศาสนาของตน เป็นต้น

ถึงแม้ว่าคนที่ระบุว่าตนเองเป็นอศาสนิกชนจะมิได้รับนับถือศาสนาใด ๆ แต่อศาสนิกชนบางกลุ่มยังคงเชื่อถือในเทวะหรือผีสางนางไม้เป็นต้น เช่น คนที่นับถือผีหรือเชื่อโชคลาง แต่ไม่ได้ประกอบพิธีกรรมใด ๆ หรือไม่ได้เป็นศาสนิก เป็นต้น

พึงทราบว่า ในบางประเทศเช่น ซาอุดิอาระเบีย บังคับให้พลเมืองต้องเป็นศาสนิกชน หรือ ประเทศไทย อศาสนิกชนอาจถูกระบุในทะเบียนบ้านเป็นพุทธศาสนิกชน หรือไม่ระบุว่าเป็นอศาสนิกชน ดังนั้น จำนวนของอศาสนิกชนในโลกนี้จึงยังไม่อาจระบุให้เป็นที่แน่นอนได้
