Media License

Hi everyone,
I am Yosri from Malay Wikipedia. Recently I was informed by certain parties that MS Wiki need to delete any images tagged as Non-Commercial under Foundation Licensing policy. After I have done some studies, I realised that Wikipedia Foundations is moving towards allowing commercialises all images, as such they are acting on behalf of commercial company to require all images loaded with tagging Non-Commercial in all Wiki Project to be removed, including those loaded in local Wiki. You are only allowed to licenses your images under "free content", which specifically allows commercial reuse, example GFDL 1.2. Certain images is exempted under a very narrow EDP ("exemption doctrine policy") definition. If you all already aware about this, please ignore this comment. Otherwise, for more details please visit http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump#Wikimedia_projects_still_using_non-commercial-only_images.3F Yosri 12:26, 2 มีนาคม 2554 (ICT)

Thanks for the information. I've personally never heard of it before. We will start an assessment on Thai Wikipedia soon. Should you have any further concerns or suggestions feel free to contact me. BTW, we'd like to hear the deadline and how you implement this policy in your Wikipedia site. Given a list of images tagged by a template or a category, I can run a script to delete them all, but I suppose it is not as simple as this. --taweethaも 13:51, 2 มีนาคม 2554 (ICT)

As per the policy (Resolution:Licensing policy) passed ages ago, here are my assessment of Thai Wikipedia.

  1. We do have a number of NC/ND media. I have updated those templates TODAY and will delete them within TWO WEEKS. This is a reasonable time for people to response to it. (see community notice at วิกิพีเดีย:ศาลาชุมชน/อภิปราย/ลบสื่อที่มีเงื่อนไข NC และ ND)
  2. We do have EDP in place. (see our fair use policy at วิกิพีเดีย:เนื้อหาที่ใช้งานโดยชอบธรรม)
  3. I have updated meta:Non-free content, so that everyone knows we have EDP in place.

Prison

Is there an article in Thai discussing the concept en:Prison? --WhisperToMe 15:21, 10 มีนาคม 2554 (ICT)

"Jail" (a room) should be "คุก", "ห้องขัง" or informal "ตะราง". For bigger place as "prison", we call it "เรือนจำ" or "สถานจองจำ". There is no article yet. (It might probably have problem with title naming too.) --octahedron80 15:33, 10 มีนาคม 2554 (ICT)

FEMA

Would someone mind making a Thai article for en:Federal Emergency Management Agency?

http://www.fema.gov/pdf/assistance/process/help_after_disaster_thai.pdf has the Thai name of the agency on the first page of the content

I think the Thai name is องค์กรเพื่อการบริหารจัดการสถานการ์ณฉุกเฉินแห่งรัฐบาลกลาง - but I'm not sure

Thanks, WhisperToMe 07:18, 11 มีนาคม 2554 (ICT)

Correctly, it should be "หน่วยจัดการสถานการณ์ฉุกเฉินกลาง". However, the document given provides its Thai name as the abovesaid "องค์กรเพื่อการบริหารจัดการสถานการ์ณฉุกเฉินแห่งรัฐบาลกลาง". --Aristitleism 03:35, 25 เมษายน 2554 (ICT)
Having looked into the document given, I find that the said Thai name would be unofficial (as well as the whole translation appearing therein), for there are certain mistranslations such as the names of the cited statutes. Thus, the name "หน่วยจัดการสถานการณ์ฉุกเฉินกลาง" would be more suitable, alongside of the name "Central Intelligence Agencies" which is officially translated as "หน่วยสืบราชการลับกลาง". --Aristitleism 10:59, 25 เมษายน 2554 (ICT)

Hello, could someone tell me the names of these comics? Also, the name of the author in Thai, please!

Thank you! - Nikukei 03:03, 25 เมษายน 2554 (ICT)

The aforementioned could be transliterated into Thai scripts as follows, but not knowing if there are certain Thai names officially given to them:
  • Shiroi Senshi Yamato = ชิโระอิเชนชิยะมะโตะ
  • Otoko No Tabidachi = โอะโตะโกะโนะทะบิดะชิ
  • Kacchū no Senshi Gamu = คัชชูโนะเซนชิกะมุ
  • Ginga: Nagareboshi Gin = กิงงะ : นะงะเระโบะชิกิง
  • Ginga Densetsu Wīdo = กิงงะเดนเซะซุวีโดะ or กิงงะเดนเซะซุวีด
  • Yoshihiro Takahashi = โยะชิฮิโระ ทะกะฮะชิ

New Page Patrol bot

Hello. My name is User:Ciphers, I am an active editor on Arabic Wikipedia and I run a bot called User:CipherBot. During the last year I was working on a bot for patrolling new pages which performs the following tasks:

  1. Check all pages created for the last month and add maintenance templates in case the article is not wikified, an orphan, no references, no categories, a short stub
  2. Warn the user who created the article to fix the article with the problem defined above
  3. Prepare a monthly report on articles with the above problems and updating it as problems in the articles was fixed
  4. Categorize new articles in separated lists depending on topics they talk about (Main topics are identified by keywords defined by users.)

I am contacting you to ask whether there could be an interest in Thai Wikipedia for such a bot. I will be ready to cooperate for any modifications to fit your policies and workflow. I am looking forward your discussions. --Ciphers 11:44, 9 พฤษภาคม 2554 (ICT)

Wikimedia Fundraiser 2011

My name is Jon Harald Søby, I am a Fundraiser Production Coordinator for the Wikimedia Foundation. My job is to facilitate translations of the fundraiser, and I saw that you helped with translations in the past.

The plan this year is to build a team of translators for each language, headed by a translation coordinator. The coordinator task is to make sure that translations are done and quality checked in time before they are published. So my question for you is if you would be willing to help out coordinating the translations for Thai?

You would not have to do all the work yourself (on the contrary - the reason we want this structure is to ease the workload on the individual volunteers), but help us find translators and check that the translations are done in time. Is this something you would be willing to do? It would be much appreciated.

Best regards,
Jon Harald Søby

Has there earlier been any suggestions here that a seperate RTGS wikipedia could be started? Chellag 20:41, 30 สิงหาคม 2554 (ICT)

If you mean to start a separate Thai project using RTGS, the answer is no.
  1. Unlike Japanese or Vietnamese, Thai has a myriad of romanization methods. None of them are perfect for all purposes.
    • RTGS incorporates consonants and vowels but not the FIVE tones.
  2. The majority of Thai speakers use Thai script and many have difficulty understanding RTGS.
    • RTGS Wikipedia would primarily serve Thai overseas diaspora and Thai-as-a-2nd-language readers in which the critical mass has not been reached.

BTW, it is possible/trivial to machine-RTGS romanize Thai Wikipedia or any everyday Thai text. Such a program is FREELY available from Chulalongkorn University. However, it is hardly possible to do it the other way round by a machine. If you wish to know more about that program, leave a message at my talk page.

A new version of the diff engine (wikidiff2) has been deployed. The most important change is that the new diff engine breaks up Thai text into words using libthai. Announcing Wikipedia 1.19 beta

Wikimedia Foundation is getting ready to push out 1.19 to all the WMF-hosted wikis. As we finish wrapping up our code review, you can test the new version right now on beta.wmflabs.org. For more information, please read the release notes or the start of the final announcement.

The following are the areas that you will probably be most interested in:

  • Faster loading of javascript files makes dependency tracking more important.
  • New common*.css files usable by skins instead of having to copy piles of generic styles from MonoBook or Vector's css.
  • The default user signature now contains a talk link in addition to the user link.
  • Searching blocked usernames in block log is now clearer.
  • Better timezone recognition in user preferences.
  • Improved diff readability for colorblind people.
  • The interwiki links table can now be accessed also when the interwiki cache is used (used in the API and the Interwiki extension).
  • More gender support (for instance in logs and user lists).
  • Language converter improved, e.g. it now works depending on the page content language.
  • Time and number-formatting magic words also now depend on the page content language.
  • Bidirectional support further improved after 1.18.

Report any problems on the labs beta wiki and we'll work to address them before they software is released to the production wikis.

Note that this cluster does have SUL but it is not integrated with SUL in production, so you'll need to create another account. You should avoid using the same password as you use here. — Global message delivery 23:36, 15 มกราคม 2555 (ICT)

Language support group for Thai

The Wikimedia Foundation has brought together a new team of developers who are dedicated to language support. This team is to support all the languages and consequently it is not realistic to expect that the team members can provide proper support for your language. It is for this reason that we are looking for volunteers who will make up a language support team.

This language support team will be asked to provide us with information about their language. Such information may need to be provided either to us or on a website that we will indicate to you. Another activity will be to test software that will likely have an effect on the running of the MediaWiki software. We are looking for people who clearly identify their ability. Formal knowledge is definitely appreciated.

As much of the activity will be concentrated on translatewiki.net, it will be a plus when team members know how to localise at translatewiki.net.

Please note that in Thailand, we use the Buddhist calendar system. In the system, we do not use Anno Domini as the main references of year. Instead, we use Buddhist Era (BE; see the above page) in which there is a calculation of "AD + 543 = BE"
The number labeled in the category is 732 BE, which is equal to 189 AD. It should be noted that although the category indicated the use of BE, and we generally use BE in year references, some historical events, especially those related to the religion and ancient history, will be mentioned with AD due to the calculation complexity between the old and new Thai Calendars. Update on IPv6

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language. Please consider translating it, as well as the full version of this announcement on Meta)

The Wikimedia Foundation is planning to do limited testing of IPv6 on June 2-3. If there are not too many problems, we may fully enable IPv6 on World IPv6 day (June 6), and keep it enabled.

What this means for your project:

  • At least on June 2-3, 2012, you may see a small number of edits from IPv6 addresses, which are in the form "2001:0db8:85a3:0000:0000:8a2e:0370:7334". See e.g. w:en:IPv6 address. These addresses should behave like any other IP address: You can leave messages on their talk pages; you can track their contributions; you can block them. (See the full version of this announcement for notes on range blocks.)
  • In the mid term, some user scripts and tools will need to be adapted for IPv6.
  • We suspect that IPv6 usage is going to be very low initially, meaning that abuse should be manageable, and we will assist in the monitoring of the situation.

Read the full version of this announcement on how to test the behavior of IPv6 with various tools and how to leave bug reports, and to find a fuller analysis of the implications of the IPv6 migration.

It is mentioned that แปลก พิบูลสงคราม (Phibul Songkhram) tried to (A) boost small businesses and (B) reduce consumption of rice) by making ผัดไทย a national dish. In other references I found, that from his government "recipes" were distributed nation-wide how to make these noodles. I am not able to search in Thai, but are these "official recipes" from the 1940s still documented? What were the ingredients? Any non-rice additives? How was ผัดไทย prepared back then and - especially of interest - how could "everybody eats often ผัดไทย " lead to a reduction (!) of rice consumption? (rice was supposed to be used for export). Thank you very much for your attention! Grey Geezer 213.169.163.156 17:40, 3 กรกฎาคม 2555 (ICT)

I have looked into Thai Wikipedia article and search for specific information you requested in Thai but I have found nothing. No Phibul-sanctioned recipe nor serious evidence to sustain the claim that Phat Thai can reduce rice consumption is available on the internet. Common sense tells me that it can't reduce rice consumption because Phat Thai noodle unlike most other Chinese noodles is made of rice flour (may contain small amount of cassava starch). (Other noodles are usually made of wheat flour and egg.) --taweethaも (พูดคุย) 13:45, 5 กรกฎาคม 2555 (ICT)
Thanks for your comment! So the story of แปลก พิบูลสงคราม (Phibul Songkhram) making it a national dish in the 1930s / 1940s is a myth ?!? (compare en:WP on the subject). Grey Geezer 213.169.163.156 21:17, 5 กรกฎาคม 2555 (ICT)
This link http://culture.mcru.ac.th/B-5.html mentioned it was invented during Phibul's government period to have a Thai noodle recipe that is different from existing noodle recipes that are perceived to be Chinese. No mention of reducing rice consumption there. --Lerdsuwa (พูดคุย) 02:46, 6 กรกฎาคม 2555 (ICT)
This link http://www.psevikul.com/index.php?lay=show&ac=article&Id=538727508&Ntype=5 theorizes that Thai must pay 1.5 million ton of rice to British as war reparations so Phat Thai that used noodle produced from broken rice grains was invented. It is only a theory from this famous writer. --Lerdsuwa (พูดคุย) 03:15, 6 กรกฎาคม 2555 (ICT)
Phibul is a source of many urban myths. I believe that the Phibul's nationalistic propaganda/agenda (including Phat Thai) was made during/before WW II. (The psevikul site says the opposite.) The liability to give rice to the U.K. after WW II was negotiated by Seni (the elder Pramoj brother) and was a result of Formal agreement for the termination of the state of war between Siam and Great Britain and India, and exchange notes between the Siamese government and Australia with a view to terminating of the state of war, signed at Singapore on 1st January 1946. (Around this time Phibul was tried for war crime in Thailand under new war crime law masterminded by Seni/Pridi to get hold of his trial in Thailand.) Phibul came back to power again after the death of King Rama VIII but nationalistic practice was no longer on top of the goverment agenda. --taweethaも (พูดคุย) 08:24, 6 กรกฎาคม 2555 (ICT)

Help decide about more than $10 million of Wikimedia donations in the coming year

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language. Please consider translating it)

Hi,

As many of you are aware, the Wikimedia Board of Trustees recently initiated important changes in the way that money is being distributed within the Wikimedia movement. As part of this, a new community-led "Funds Dissemination Committee" (FDC) is currently being set up. Already in 2012-13, its recommendations will guide the decisions about the distribution of over 10 million US dollars among the Foundation, chapters and other eligible entities.

Now, seven capable, knowledgeable and trustworthy community members are sought to volunteer on the initial Funds Dissemination Committee. It is expected to take up its work in September. In addition, a community member is sought to be the Ombudsperson for the FDC process. If you are interested in joining the committee, read the call for volunteers. Nominations are planned to close on August 15.

Wikidata is getting close to a first roll-out

(Apologies if this message isn't in your language.)

As some of you might already have heard Wikimedia Deutschland is working on a new Wikimedia project. It is called m:Wikidata. The goal of Wikidata is to become a central data repository for the Wikipedias, its sister projects and the world. In the future it will hold data like the number of inhabitants of a country, the date of birth of a famous person or the length of a river. These can then be used in all Wikimedia projects and outside of them.

The project is divided into three phases and "we are getting close to roll-out the first phase". The phases are:

  1. language links in the Wikipedias (making it possible to store the links between the language editions of an article just once in Wikidata instead of in each linked article)
  2. infoboxes (making it possible to store the data that is currently in infoboxes in one central place and share the data)
  3. lists (making it possible to create lists and similar things based on queries to Wikidata so they update automatically when new data is added or modified)

It'd be great if you could join us, test the demo version, provide feedback and take part in the development of Wikidata. You can find all the relevant information including an FAQ and sign-up links for our on-wiki newsletter on the Wikidata page on Meta.

For further discussions please use this talk page (if you are uncomfortable writing in English you can also write in your native language there) or point me to the place where your discussion is happening so I can answer there.

Fundraising localization: volunteers from outside the USA needed

Please translate for your local community

Hello All,

The Wikimedia Foundation's Fundraising team have begun our 'User Experience' project, with the goal of understanding the donation experience in different countries outside the USA and enhancing the localization of our donation pages. I am searching for volunteers to spend 30 minutes on a Skype chat with me, reviewing their own country's donation pages. It will be done on a 'usability' format (I will ask you to read the text and go through the donation flow) and will be asking your feedback in the meanwhile.

The only pre-requisite is for the volunteer to actually live in the country and to have access to at least one donation method that we offer for that country (mainly credit/debit card, but also real-time banking like IDEAL, E-wallets, etc...) so we can do a live test and see if the donation goes through. All volunteers will be reimbursed of the donations that eventually succeed (and they will be low amounts, like 1-2 dollars)

By helping us you are actually helping thousands of people to support our mission of free knowledge across the world. Please sing up and help us with our 'User Experience' project! :) If you are interested (or know of anyone who could be) please email ppena@wikimedia.org. All countries needed (excepting USA)!

Thanks!

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons.

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

What Thai sources about Lauda Air Flight 004 are available online? I read on non-RS sources that a Thai dynasty in northern Thailand was destroyed by the crash. A forum post said "Out of 223 who lost their lives, 38 were Thais, but out of this 38 more than half of them were from Chiang Mai. And these 20 or so all belonged to Chiang Mai's elitist familes. According to Rosalind C Morris, the 2 two last 'jaos' (nobles) of the former ruling family of the north were killed (Pairat Decharin was also governor of Chiang Mai at the time). The shock of the loss of the final nobles of the north hit so much that HM the King, HM Queen and HRH Sirindhorn attended the funeral."

Are there any Thai reliable sources that confirm this? WhisperToMe (พูดคุย) 01:26, 16 กุมภาพันธ์ 2556 (ICT)

Personally, as the incident occurred on 26 May 1991, the time that I was not yet born, so I don't know much about it. But I found two online newspapers as follows:
  • One states that 223 people perished in the incident, 39 [not 38] of whom were Thais, including many public figures such as Winit Winitchaiyaphak (วินิจ วินิจฉัยภาค), Deputy Principal Private Secretary, and Pairat Decharin, Chiang Mai Governor.[1]
  • The other states that the deceased included: Pairat Decharin and his wife; Mom Sinuan Na Chiangmai (หม่อมศรีนวล ณ เชียงใหม่), consort of Chao Ratchabut (Wongtawan Na Chiang Mai), the prince of Chiang Mai; and Chao Phongkaeo Na Lamphun (เจ้าพงศ์แก้ว ณ ลำพูน), daughter of Chao Ratchabut.[2]
The above are the only reliable sources I could find on the internet. And I didn't find any source mentioning about either the shock of Bhumibol and his family or their attendance at the funerals.

Thank you so much! WhisperToMe (พูดคุย) 02:44, 16 กุมภาพันธ์ 2556 (ICT)

But please note that the entire Chiang Mai royal family did not perish in the incident as may be rumoured. There still exist many Chiang Mai royals, such as Chao Duangduean Na Chiang Mai, who is well known for her roles as a lawmaker and in promoting Chiang Mai's cultures. --Aristitleism (พูดคุย) 02:58, 16 กุมภาพันธ์ 2556 (ICT)

Ok. I'll see which ones can get English articles. I found:
Weeradet, Thanin. "HOUSE OF MEMORIES." Bangkok Post at the Asia Africa Intelligence Wire. March 3, 2005.
And it discusses Chao Somprathana Na Nan, the granddaughter of Chao Ratchabut, who was the son of Chao Mahaphrom Surathada, the final Nan ruler. The granddaughter lived in Khum Chao Ratchabut. But is this the same Chao Ratchabut?
Thanks, WhisperToMe (พูดคุย) 03:22, 16 กุมภาพันธ์ 2556 (ICT)
  1. "Chao Ratchabut" was a royal title in the old Kingdom of Chiang Mai. Many Chiang Mai royals held it, as you may find in the category "เจ้าราชบุตร".
  2. The grandfather of Chao Somprathana Na Nan was Chao Ratchabut (Mokfa Na Nan).

Chao Ratchabut is the spelling according to the official system. But other spellings could be found, such as Rajaputra (Sanskrit style) and Rajabut (maybe the mixture of the official system and the Sanskrit style). The term 'Ratchabut' (or 'Rajaputra') is from Sanskrit raja (royal) + putra (child). Moreover, the word 'chao' (official system) can also be spelled 'jao'. --Aristitleism (พูดคุย) 11:48, 16 กุมภาพันธ์ 2556 (ICT)

Wikidata phase 1 (language links) coming to this Wikipedia

Sorry for writing in English. I hope someone can translate this locally.

Wikidata has been in development for a few months now. It is now time for the roll-out of the first part of it on your Wikipedia. Phase 1 is the support for the management of language links. It is already being used on the Hungarian, Hebrew, Italian and English Wikipedias. The next step is to enable the extension on all other Wikipedias. We have currently planned this for March 6.

What is Wikidata?

Wikidata is a central place to store data that you can usually find in infoboxes. Think of it as something like Wikimedia Commons but for data (like the number of inhabitants of a country or the length of a river) instead of multimedia. The first part of this project (centralizing language links) is being rolled out now. The more fancy things will follow later.

What is going to happen?

Language links in the sidebar are going to come from Wikidata in addition to the ones in the wiki text. To edit them, scroll to the bottom of the language links, and click edit. You no longer need to maintain these links by hand in the wiki text of the article.

Where can I find more information and ask questions?

Editors on en:wp have created a great page with all the necessary information for editors and there is also an FAQ for this deployment. Please ask questions you might have on the FAQ’s discussion page.

I want to be kept up to date about Wikidata

Wikidata phase 1 (language links) live on this Wikipedia

Sorry for writing in English. I hope someone can translate this locally. If you understand German better than English you can have a look at the announcement on de:Wikipedia:Kurier.

As I annonced 2 weeks ago, Wikidata phase 1 (language links) has been deployed here today. Language links in the sidebar are coming from Wikidata in addition to the ones in the wiki text.

It'd be great if you could bring this to this wiki if that has not already happened. Please ask questions you might have on the FAQ’s discussion page.

สำเร็จ Thanks. The Thai announcement is now up on our Wiki. Also, thanks to Nullzero's suggestions, we have activated filters to label addition/removal of interwiki links and our bot(s) will clean up the links shortly. --taweethaも (พูดคุย) 11:38, 7 มีนาคม 2556 (ICT)

Bangkok post archives

I read on a personal website that the June 5, 1991 Bangkok Post said that a Thorn Sappakerd ritual had been performed in Suphan Buri Province after the Lauda Air crash. Does anyone have access to that issue of the Bangkok Post? Thanks WhisperToMe (พูดคุย) 14:08, 11 มีนาคม 2556 (ICT)

I have an access to three news clipping databases (iQNewsClip, MATICHON e-library and NEWSCenter) and hard-copy/microform collection of mainstream Thai newspapers. If you could specify date and page number and your email address, I will be able to retrieve the information for you with in a few weeks. Perhaps, you want all news published during a week after the incident instead? Let me know if it is the case. I can try doing that as well. Alternatively, you may consult your local library. (See en:WorldCat.) --taweethaも (พูดคุย) 08:53, 12 มีนาคม 2556 (ICT)
I would like to start with all news possible after the incident, please. As for June 5 article, tnfortunately I have been unable to find the title of the article, but I can imagine that it is towards the front page. I will send you an e-mail so you have it :) WhisperToMe (พูดคุย) 15:03, 18 มีนาคม 2556 (ICT)
สำเร็จ Please send me an email. We can discuss the detail further. --taweethaも (พูดคุย) 07:34, 19 มีนาคม 2556 (ICT)

Convert complex templates to Lua to make them faster and more powerful

(Please consider translating this message for the benefit of your fellow Wikimedians)

Greetings. As you might have seen on the Wikimedia tech blog or the tech ambassadors list, a new functionality called "Lua" is being enabled on all Wikimedia sites today. Lua is a scripting language that enables you to write faster and more powerful MediaWiki templates.

If you have questions about how to convert existing templates to Lua (or how to create new ones), we'll be holding two support sessions on IRC next week: one on Wednesday (for Oceania, Asia & America) and one on Friday (for Europe, Africa & America); see m:IRC office hours for the details. If you can't make it, you can also get help at mw:Talk:Lua scripting.

If you'd like to learn about this kind of events earlier in advance, consider becoming a Tech ambassador by subscribing to the mailing list. You will also be able to help your fellow Wikimedians have a voice in technical discussions and be notified of important decisions.

Guillaume Paumier, via the Global message delivery system. 03:26, 14 มีนาคม 2556 (ICT) (wrong page? You can fix it.)

 สำเร็จ I have announced about this new namespace. Thanks. --Nullzero (พูดคุย) 16:40, 14 มีนาคม 2556 (ICT)

Wikidata phase 2 (infoboxes) coming to this Wikipedia

Sorry for writing in English. I hope someone can translate this. If you understand German better than English you can have a look at the announcement on de:Wikipedia:Kurier.

A while ago the first phase of Wikidata was enabled on this Wikipedia. This means you are getting the language links in each article from Wikidata. It is soon time to enable the second phase of Wikidata (infoboxes) here. We have already done this on the [first 11 Wikipedias] (it, he, hu, ru, tr, uk, uz, hr, bs, sr, sh) and things are looking good. The next step is English Wikipedia. This is planned for April 8. If everything works out fine we will deploy on all remaining Wikipedias on April 10. I will update this part of the FAQ if there are any issues forcing us to change this date. I will also sent another note to this village pump once the deployment is finished.

What will happen once we have phase 2 enabled here? Once it is enabled in a few days you will be able to make use of the structured data that is available on Wikidata in your articles/infoboxes. It includes things like the symbol for a chemical element, the ISBN for a book or the top level domain of a country. (None of this will happen automatically. Someone will have to change the article or infobox template for this to happen!)

How will this work? There are two ways to access the data:

  • Use a parser function like {{#property:p169}} in the wiki text of the article on Yahoo!. This will return “Marissa Mayer” as she is the chief executive officer of the company.
  • For more complicated things you can use Lua. The documentation for this is here.

We are working on expanding the parser function so you can for example use {{#property:chief executive officer}} instead of {{#property:p169}}. The complete plan for this is here.

Where can I test this? You can already test it on test2.

Where can I find more information and ask questions? We have collected the main questions in an FAQ for this deployment. Please ask questions you might have on the FAQ’s discussion page.

Wikidata phase 2 (infoboxes) is here

Sorry for writing in English. I hope someone can translate this. If you understand German better than English you can have a look at the announcement on de:Wikipedia:Kurier.

A while ago the first phase of Wikidata was enabled on this Wikipedia. This means you are getting the language links in each article from Wikidata. We have already done this on the [first 11 Wikipedias] (it, he, hu, ru, tr, uk, uz, hr, bs, sr, sh) a month ago and two days ago on the English Wikipedia. Today all the remaining Wikipedias followed.

What does having phase 2 enabled here mean? You are now able to make use of the structured data that is available on Wikidata in your articles/infoboxes. It includes things like the symbol for a chemical element, the ISBN for a book or the top level domain of a country. (None of this will happen automatically. Someone will have to change the article or infobox template for this to happen!) The current state is just the beginning though. It will be extended based on feedback we get from you now.

How will this work? There are two ways to access the data:

  • Use a parser function like {{#property:p159}} in the wiki text of the article on Wikimedia Foundation. This will return “San Francisco” as that is the headquarter location of the non-profit.
  • For more complicated things you can use Lua. The documentation for this is here.

We are working on expanding the parser function so you can for example use {{#property:headquarter location}} instead of {{#property:p159}}. The complete plan for this is here.

Where can I test this? You can test it on test2 if you don't want to do it in an article here.

Where can I find more information and ask questions? We have collected the main questions in an FAQ for this deployment. Please ask questions you might have on the FAQ’s discussion page.
