Trouble viewing Thai fonts

Hi, I used to be able to view any Thai script on my computer without any problems whatsoever, but then I realized I wasn't able to view Lao scripts on my computer so I downloaded some fonts to fix it but now, lo and behold, I can't see Thai fonts anymore! I'm really at a loss and I dont know what to do, interestingly enough, when I type Thai, I'm able to see it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I got the same problems when I have both Lao and Thai in the same PC. I'm looking for the answer also. Hope that someone can answer soon.
Unable to help but just let you know that I have no problem at all with Thai and Lao fonts in the same machine. --Pi@k 02:32, 1 พฤษภาคม 2006 (UTC)
I was playing around today with unicode fonts and got exactly the same problem. I found out, that the Ethiopic font Ethiopic WashRa SemiBold Slant (washrasbsl.ttf) (and apperantly all fonts from the packages "All_KhmerOS_31.zip") seems to be causing problems (at least on my system). After I deleted that font, I could read Thai without problems again. 80.108.135.188 10:25, 12 เมษายน 2007 (UTC)

Thai transliteration

Hi, I find it very difficult to read Thai, and I am looking for transliteration pop-up software. And I am wondering if there is a good site that has tutorials for learning Thai. Thanks for reading. --McDogm 13:28, 10 สิงหาคม 2005 (UTC)

Hello McDogm. Thank you for interested in Thai Wikipedia. You might check these sites [1] for learning Thai language. About the transliteration software, other people might get the answer for you.--Manop 20:32, 11 สิงหาคม 2005 (UTC)
For transliteration the tools by Wirote Aroonmanakun are very helpful. Sadly the online transcription tool is offline for some time already, so you have to download the software instead.

statistics

This is very interesting to see Wikipedia in other languages, when you know that a button is "history" or "modify" and see the equivalent words. My interest for cryptography makes me wondering what are the statistics of Thai language, especially the index of coincidence or frequency analysis of the letters. fr:Utilisateur:Dake

Hello, good to see another people visited Thai wikipedia. Anyway, So far in Thai wikipedia we have

Hi there, I would like to warn the admins and people taking care of the existence and quality of articles in Thai WP. Some 40 students of me will make contributions in the next days, substantial I hope, but may be not all in the best WP style. So please be patient if there is a "new wave" coming in. They are native writers and I hope that 5% will convert to active users of WP. --Media lib 15:01, 6 กันยายน 2005 (UTC)

Character encoding in Firefox

If I use Firefox 1.5 as a webbrowser then the Thai characters are not displayed at all. If I use Internet Explorer 6.0 the characters are displayed correctly. Both browsers use Unicode (UTF-8) encoding. How can I configure Firefox to display the Thai alphabet? Otto ter Haar 23:41, 5 กุมภาพันธ์ 2006 (UTC)

In Firefox 1.5, you can't config fonts for Unicode, just select proper Thai fonts for Thai encoding and when it find Thai characters in Unicode page, it will show that fonts from Thai. Markpeak 00:50, 6 กุมภาพันธ์ 2006 (UTC)
I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.1 with Unicode (UTF-8). It works fine for me. My best suggestion is to google for Thai fonts.--Manop | พูดคุย - 06:48, 6 กุมภาพันธ์ 2006 (UTC)
I followed your advice, googled for Thai fonts, installed several of them, but still no results in Firefox. Can you supply me with a link to a font from which you know it works? Now I have to change browser every time I look at the Thai wiki. Otto ter Haar 09:30, 4 มีนาคม 2006 (UTC)

Spaces

I'm a MediaWiki developer. I recently updated the "diff" algorithm to provide character-level diffs in Thai text. I have read that the Thai language does not use spaces to separate words, and this seems to be true to some extent. And yet articles here seem to have spaces scattered through them. I was wondering, are these spaces present simply to trigger line breaks in browsers such as Firefox and Opera which do not support Thai word segmentation? Or is the space intended? Would the Thai Wikipedia benefit if MediaWiki automatically inserted tags at word boundaries? Should MediaWiki automatically suppress the display of existing spaces in the wikitext? Or should we work on getting Thai word segmentation support into Firefox, similar to the current support in Internet Explorer? -- Tim Starling 11:03, 20 กุมภาพันธ์ 2006 (UTC)

Spaces are used to separate sentences or break complex sentence into smaller piece to ease reading. They are also used to separate special symbols like ๆ, parentheses, etc. according to standard printing styles. Suppressing them would make it hard to read. My suggestion would be leave them alone. The Firefox I used (came with LinuxTLE distribution) already did a good job with word break. -- Lerdsuwa 11:24, 20 กุมภาพันธ์ 2006 (UTC)
Point taken regarding the need for explicit spaces. As for the word break problem, what version of Firefox are you using? Does this page look alright? For me, Opera 8.5 and Firefox 1.5.0.1 render it as one long line, whereas IE 6 breaks it appropriately. Does anyone else have trouble with word breaks? -- Tim Starling 12:12, 20 กุมภาพันธ์ 2006 (UTC)
It's a localized version of Firefox from opentle. I believe it is patched to use ICU library for word break. Mine displays multiple lines, with wordbreaks sometimes appear at strange places. Other wordbreak library exists: libthai. -- Lerdsuwa 13:12, 20 กุมภาพันธ์ 2006 (UTC)
I have the problem with the test page though. I'm using the Firefox 1.5.0.1. It appears as one long line as you said. Since the localized version is not appear in mozilla.com. I might go for the orignial version as some people do.--Manop | พูดคุย - 17:50, 20 กุมภาพันธ์ 2006 (UTC)
Alright, well it sounds like word breaking for display is properly a browser issue, not a MediaWiki issue. There's still two applications for Thai word breaking in MediaWiki though: search and diffs. I imagine the search engine is next-to-useless at the moment, is that right? And how are you finding the character level diffs? In some cases (e.g. [3]) I imagine word-level diffs would be better. -- Tim Starling 00:51, 21 กุมภาพันธ์ 2006 (UTC)
Hello Tim. I strongly agree with you that word-level diffs is better. We have some problems with search also. For example, refer to the page[2] you mentioned in the diff issue, searching with words that are substrings of รายชื่อศิษย์เก่าโรงเรียนสวนกุหลาบวิทยาลัยที่มีชื่อเสียง like รายชื่อศิษย์เก่า (the substring at the beginning) or สวนกุหลาบ (the substring in the middle) should return [2] as one of the results, but the first search returns nothing and the second search return the topic whose exact title is สวนกุหลาบ. Another example, searching with more than one keywords like ศิษย์เก่า and สวนกุหลาบ as keywords should return [2] as one of the results, however, it does not. I think word-level processing will solve this issue, isn't it.
Perhaps this might help you understand the context better:
(1) รายชื่อศิษย์เก่าโรงเรียนสวนกุหลาบวิทยาลัยที่มีชื่อเสียง = The Suankularb college alumni hall of fame (literally, the name list of the famous Suankularb college alumni)
Suankularb (A college name)
(4) ศิษย์เก่า = alumni.

Thai Fonts download

For viewing Thai Wikipedia, Thai font is needed. If you don't have Thai font installed in your system. Then, please download Thai fonts (true type fonts) from this site

ftp://linux.thai.net/pub/ThaiLinux/software/thai-ttf/

Choose the latest update version, such as ftp://linux.thai.net/pub/ThaiLinux/software/thai-ttf/thai-ttf-0.4.7.tar.gz

Extract files into a temporary folder/directory. And then, install these fonts into your system.

For Windows system, select "Control Panel" and then "Fonts", menu "File / Install new font.." and then browse for the folder/directory you've just extracted the fonts file, "Select all" and install them.

These are free Thai fonts and we encourage you to use them.

"The Holy Communion is the sacrament which commemorates the death of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross. As members partake of the flesh and blood of the Lord, they are in spiritual communion with him - having the hope of eternal life and ressurrection on the last day. Only one unleavened bread and grape juice is used and shared among the congregation."

Holy Communion =

sacrament = ศีลศักดิ์สิทธิ์

Resurrection (of Jesus Christ) =

In the quote above is the rendering of the requested matters. Luckily I've got the Royal Institute's Dictionary of International Religious Terms, 2005 Version. However, I was not sure about the meaning of "the last day" for I am irreligious; I suggested the term was about the day Jesus Christ resurrected following his death; please do further research for this.

Hi, the Hebrew wikipedia is becoming more freindly, But we need your help! Would you be kind and translate the following into Thai?:

"Shalom and Welcome to the Hebrew Wikipedia!

Hebrew is a Semitic language of the Afro-Asiatic language family spoken by more than six million people in Israel and by an unknown number of people in Jewish and Israeli communities around the world. In Israel, it is the de facto language of the state and the people, as well as being one of the two official languages (together with Arabic), and it is spoken by the majority of the population.

Modern Hebrew is written from right to left using the Hebrew alphabet, and it is the language of the Bible.

The Hebrew Wikipedia is the Hebrew edition of Wikipedia. This edition began in July 2003 and has over 67,000 articles as of 17 December 2007. Introduction of Malay Wikipedia

Greetings from Malay Language Wikipedia! I would love to see our language introduction in Thai. Can someone please translate this quote:

Want to know about Malay? The Malay language is of Austronesian stock, spoken mainly in the Malay Archipelago of Southeast Asia namely the countries of Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Southern Thailand, the Southern Philippines and even as far as Christmas Island in Australia. The language achieved the status of lingua franca in the region during the height of the Malaccan Sultanate in the 15th and 16th century. As of late the importance of Malay as a language is being noted worldwide.

It will appear in Malay Language introduction in the main page of Wikipedia Bahasa Melayu.

Sorry to create an article that will be deleted soon, so here is my problem : sommeone in the french version of Wikipedia asked about something (perhaps) related to the thai language, so I thought that the easier way should be to get an answer here in the thai version of Wikipedia. Unfortunately, I can't read the thai alphabet (and, sorry to say, I don't speak thai) so I can't know where I can keep some information through this site. Can I suggest you to create a specific page where people that can read latin alphabet should access to ask you something related to thai language or to Thailand ?

Kind regards.

Hello!

The Movement Strategy and Governance team of the Wikimedia Foundation would like to invite you to the next event about "Regional and Thematic Hubs". The Wikimedia Movement is in the process of understanding what Regional and Thematic Hubs should be. Our workshop in November was a good start (read the report), but we're not finished yet.

Over the last weeks we conducted about 16 interviews with groups working on establishing a Hub in their context (see Hubs Dialogue). These interviews informed a report that will serve as a foundation for discussion on March 12. The report is planned to be published on March 9.

The event will take place on March 12, 13:00 to 16:00 UTC on Zoom. Interpretation will be provided in French, Spanish, Arabic, Russian, and Portuguese. Registration is open, and will close on March 10. Anyone interested in the topic is invited to join us. More information on the event on Meta-wiki.

Join the Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan conversations with Maryana Iskander

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.

Hello,

The Movement Communications and Movement Strategy and Governance teams invite you to discuss the 2022-23 Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan, a plan of record for the Wikimedia Foundation's work.

These conversations continue Maryana Iskander's Wikimedia Foundation Chief Executive Officer listening tour.

The conversations are about these questions:

  • The 2030 Wikimedia Movement Strategy sets a direction toward "knowledge as a service" and "knowledge equity". The Wikimedia Foundation wants to plan according to these two goals. How do you think the Wikimedia Foundation should apply them to our work?
  • The Wikimedia Foundation continues to explore better ways of working at a regional level. We have increased our regional focus in areas like grants, new features, and community conversations. What is working well? How can we improve?
  • Anyone can contribute to the Movement Strategy process. Let's collect your activities, ideas, requests, and lessons learned. How can the Wikimedia Foundation better support the volunteers and affiliates working in Movement Strategy activities?

You can find the schedule of calls on Meta-wiki.

The information will be available in multiple languages. Each call will be open to anyone to attend. Live interpretation will be available in some calls.

Best regards,

Next steps: Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) and UCoC Enforcement Guidelines

The Community Affairs Committee of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees would like to thank everyone who participated in the recently concluded community vote on the Enforcement Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC).

The volunteer scrutinizing group has completed the review of the accuracy of the vote and has reported the total number of votes received as 2,283. Out of the 2,283 votes received, a total of 1,338 (58.6%) community members voted for the enforcement guidelines, and a total of 945 (41.4%) community members voted against it. In addition, 658 participants left comments with 77% of the comments written in English.

We recognize and appreciate the passion and commitment that community members have demonstrated in creating a safe and welcoming culture that stops hostile and toxic behavior, supports people targeted by such behavior, and encourages good faith people to be productive on the Wikimedia projects.

Even at this incomplete stage, this is evident in the comments received. While the Enforcement Guidelines did reach a threshold of support necessary for the Board to review, we encouraged voters, regardless of which way they were voting, to provide feedback on the elements of the enforcement guidelines that they felt needed to be changed or fixed, as well as why, in case it seemed advisable to launch a further round of edits that would address community concerns.

Foundation staff who have been reviewing comments have advised us of some of the emerging themes, and as a result we have decided as Community Affairs Committee to ask the Foundation to reconvene the drafting committee and to undertake another community engagement to refine the enforcement guidelines based on the community feedback received from the recently concluded vote.

For clarity, this feedback has been clustered into 4 sections as follows:

  1. To identify the type, purpose, and applicability of the training;
  2. To simplify the language for easier translation and comprehension by non-experts;
  3. To explore the concept of affirmation, including its pros and cons;
  4. To review the conflicting roles of privacy/victim protection and right to be heard.

Other issues may emerge during conversations, and particularly as the draft Enforcement Guidelines evolve, but we see these as the primary areas of concern for voters and are asking staff to facilitate review of these issues. After further engagement, the Foundation should re-run the community vote to evaluate the revamped Enforcement Outline to see if the new document is then ready for its official ratification.

Further, we are aware of the concerns with the note 3.1 in the Universal Code of Conduct Policy. We are directing the Foundation to facilitate a review of this language to ensure that the Policy meets its intended purposes of supporting a safe and inclusive community, without waiting for the planned review of the entire Policy at the end of year.

Again, we thank all who participated, thinking about these critical and difficult challenges and contributing to better approaches across the movement to working together well.

Best,

Rosie

Call for volunteers: 2022 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election

<languages/> The Movement Strategy and Governance team is looking for community members to serve as election volunteers in the upcoming Board of Trustees election.

The idea of the Election Volunteer Program came up during the 2021 Wikimedia Board of Trustees Election. This program turned out to be successful. With the help of Election Volunteers we were able to increase outreach and participation in the election by 1,753 voters over 2017. Overall turnout was 10.13%, 1.1 percentage points more, and 214 wikis were represented in the election.

But a total of 74 wikis that did not participate in 2017 produced voters in the 2021 election. Can you help change the participation?

Election volunteers will help in the following areas:

  • Translate short messages and announce the ongoing election process in community channels
  • Optional: Monitor community channels for community comments and questions

Volunteers should:

  • Maintain the friendly space policy during conversations and events
  • Present the guidelines and voting information to the community in a neutral manner

Do you want to be an election volunteer and ensure your community is represented in the vote? Sign up here to receive updates. You can use the talk page for questions about translation.

Invitation to participate in the #WPWPCampaign 2022

Dear Wikimedians,

We are glad to inform you that the 2022 edition of Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos campaign is coming up in July.

This is a formal invitation to invite individuals and communities to join the campaign to help improve Wikipedia articles with photos and contextual images.

The campaign will run from July 1 to August 31, 2022 and several communities and Wikimedia Affiliates have already indicated interest to organize the campaign in their localities. Please find your community or community closer to you to participate: WPWP2022 Campaign: Participating Communities.

The campaign primarily aims to promote using images from Wikimedia Commons to enrich Wikipedia articles that are lacking them. Participants will choose among Wikipedia pages without photos, then add a suitable file from among the many thousands of photos in the Wikimedia Commons, especially those uploaded from thematic contests (Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, etc.) over the years. In this third edition of the campaign, eligibility criteria have been revised based on feedback and campaign Evaluation Reports of the previous editions. Seeking feedback on the UCoC Enforcement Guidelines from Thai Communities

Earlier this year, the Universal Code of Code Enforcement Guidelines went through the community voting phase. Thai Wikipedia had a lot of eligible voters but many did not participate in the community voting. Therefore we would really like to get feedback and thoughts on the Universal Code of Conduct and the Enforcement Guideline from Thai communities.

Do you think the current draft text of the enforcement guidelines would work well for your community? If there are issues, what are the issues that you see? We have started a discussion on the Movement Strategy Forum, and also on meta (both the policy and the enforcement guidelines). We would like to invite everyone from Thai communities to join the discussions, and also try out the Movement Strategy Forum which has automatic translations. Thank you! (My apologies for writing this message in English.)

Vote for Election Compass Statements

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.

Hi all,

Volunteers in the 2022 Board of Trustees election are invited to vote for statements to use in the Election Compass. You can vote for the statements you would like to see included in the Election Compass on Meta-wiki.

An Election Compass is a tool to help voters select the candidates that best align with their beliefs and views. The community members will propose statements for the candidates to answer using a Lickert scale (agree/neutral/disagree). The candidates’ answers to the statements will be loaded into the Election Compass tool. Voters will use the tool by entering in their answer to the statements (agree/disagree/neutral). The results will show the candidates that best align with the voter’s beliefs and views.

Here is the timeline for the Election Compass:

  • July 8 - 20: Volunteers propose statements for the Election Compass
  • July 21 - 22: Elections Committee reviews statements for clarity and removes off-topic statements
  • July 23 - August 1: Volunteers vote on the statements
  • August 2 - 4: Elections Committee selects the top 15 statements
  • August 5 - 12: candidates align themselves with the statements
  • August 15: The Election Compass opens for voters to use to help guide their voting decision

The Elections Committee will select the top 15 statements at the beginning of August

Movement Strategy and Governance

Delay of the 2022 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.

Hi all,

I am reaching out to you today with an update about the timing of the voting for the Board of Trustees election.

As many of you are already aware, this year we are offering an Election Compass to help voters identify the alignment of candidates on some key topics. Several candidates requested an extension of the character limitation on their responses expanding on their positions, and the Elections Committee felt their reasoning was consistent with the goals of a fair and equitable election process.

To ensure that the longer statements can be translated in time for the election, the Elections Committee and Board Selection Task Force decided to delay the opening of the Board of Trustees election by one week - a time proposed as ideal by staff working to support the election.

Although it is not expected that everyone will want to use the Election Compass to inform their voting decision, the Elections Committee felt it was more appropriate to open the voting period with essential translations for community members across languages to use if they wish to make this important decision.

The voting will open on August 23 at 00:00 UTC and close on September 6 at 23:59 UTC.

Best regards,

Matanya, on behalf of the Elections Committee

A/B test for topic subscriptions

Hello, all.

The mw:Talk pages project would like to offer a new [ติดตาม] button to half of the editors here.  The new [ติดตาม] button will appear on each ==Section== of a talk page with comments.  If you click the new [ติดตาม] button, you will "subscribe" or "follow" the discussion.  You will get a message in Special:Notifications when someone posts a comment in that section.

This is only for 50% of logged-in editors (not IPs).  Existing editors will need to click the new button to subscribe to a discussion.  New editors will be automatically subscribed to all topics that they start.  The Editing team hopes this will help new editors communicate with you.  You can test the [ติดตาม] button now, on this page, by clicking on https://th.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%B8%A7%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%9E%E0%B8%B5%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%94%E0%B8%B5%E0%B8%A2:%E0%B8%AA%E0%B8%96%E0%B8%B2%E0%B8%99%E0%B8%97%E0%B8%B9%E0%B8%95%E0%B8%A7%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%81%E0%B8%B4%E0%B8%A1%E0%B8%B5%E0%B9%80%E0%B8%94%E0%B8%B5%E0%B8%A2?dtenable=1

You can learn more and talk to the Editing team at mw:Talk pages project/Notifications.  If you don't like it, you can turn it off in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures and Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

This could be offered here in a couple of weeks.  Please tell me if your Wikipedia does not want to try this. Whatamidoing (WMF) (คุย) 11:59, 24 มีนาคม 2565 (+07)

Update: The results for the previous A/B test, for the New Topic Tool, have been posted. You can read the report. Short answer: It is better for new editors than the old form. The Editing team would like to turn this on here. After that, they will start the A/B test for the [subscribe] button. If you do not want to use it, you can turn it off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Thank you for helping us test this new tool. Visual changes are coming to Vector 2022

TLDR: This is an update on the Desktop Improvements project. We have been working on the visual refinements to the Vector 2022 skin. We want to make significant changes, and we are asking you for collaboration.

Over the past two years, we have made structural changes to the interface. We have moved various features to new places. After that, we turned our attention to the visual design. This is about colors, backgrounds, font sizes - the overall look that makes the website distinct (see the main task on Phabricator). If this part is done well, all the features will work better, and the site will be more organized and accessible for different groups of users.

As usual, using the banners, we invited the communities to help us decide what exactly should be changed, and how. This was the fifth prototype testing. Within a month, over 150 users from 22 communities answered our questions. We analyzed their feedback, and asked experienced designers for their opinion. Based on that, we began implementing the changes. In particular:

  • Two weeks ago: we changed the color for menu triggers (such as More or Languages) and menu items (such as, respectively: Move, the interwiki links) to blue (T312157)
  • This week: we will slightly change the shade of blue for link colors (T213778)
  • (No sooner than in 2 weeks)
    • We will increase the font size from 14px to 16px. To keep a similar number of characters per line, we will increase the content area width from 960px to 1040px (T254055). We will also give instructions on how to keep the current settings on an individual basis.
    • We will mark the active section of the table of contents in bold (T314670)

Invitation to attend “Ask Me Anything about Movement Charter” Sessions

Hello all,

During the 2022 Wikimedia Summit, the Movement Charter Drafting Committee (MCDC) presented the first outline of the Movement Charter, giving a glimpse on the direction of its future work, and the Charter itself. The MCDC then integrated the initial feedback collected during the Summit. Before proceeding with writing the Charter for the whole Movement, the MCDC wants to interact with community members and gather feedback on the drafts of the three sections: Preamble, Values & Principles, and Roles & Responsibilities (intentions statement). The Movement Charter drafts will be available on the Meta page here on November 14, 2022. Community wide consultation period on MC will take place from November 20 to December 18, 2022. Learn more about it here.

With the goal of ensuring that people are well informed to fully participate in the conversations and are empowered to contribute their perspective on the Movement Charter, three “Ask Me Anything about Movement Charter" sessions have been scheduled in different time zones. Everyone in the Wikimedia Movement is invited to attend these conversations. The aim is to learn about Movement Charter - its goal, purpose, why it matters, and how it impacts your community. MCDC members will attend these sessions to answer your questions and hear community feedback.

The “Ask Me Anything” sessions accommodate communities from different time zones. Only the presentation of the session is recorded and shared afterwards, no recording of conversations. Below is the list of planned events:

  • Asia/Pacific: November 4, 2022 at 09:00 UTC (your local time). Interpretation is available in Chinese and Japanese.
  • Europe/MENA/Sub Saharan Africa: November 12, 2022 at 15:00 UTC (your local time). Interpretation is available in Arabic, French and Russian.
  • Latin America/North America/ Western Europe: November 12, 2022 at 15:00 UTC (your local time). Interpretation is available in Spanish and Portuguese.

On the Meta page you will find more details; Zoom links will be shared 48 hours ahead of the call.

Call for Movement Charter Ambassadors

Individuals or groups from all communities who wish to help include and start conversations in their communities on the Movement Charter are encouraged to become Movement Charter Ambassadors (MC Ambassadors). MC Ambassadors will carry out their own activities and get financial support for enabling conversations in their own languages. Regional facilitators from the Movement Strategy and Governance team are available to support applicants with MC Ambassadors grantmaking. If you are interested please sign up here. Should you have specific questions, please reach out to the MSG team via email: strategy2030@wikimedia.org or on the MS forum.

We thank you for your time and participation.

Upcoming vote on the revised Enforcement Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.

Hello all,

In mid-January 2023, the Enforcement Guidelines for the Universal Code of Conduct will undergo a second community-wide ratification vote. This follows the March 2022 vote, which resulted in a majority of voters supporting the Enforcement Guidelines. During the vote, participants helped highlight important community concerns. The Board’s Community Affairs Committee requested that these areas of concern be reviewed.

The volunteer-led Revisions Committee worked hard reviewing community input and making changes. They updated areas of concern, such as training and affirmation requirements, privacy and transparency in the process, and readability and translatability of the document itself.

The revised Enforcement Guidelines can be viewed here, and a comparison of changes can be found here.

How to vote?

Beginning January 17, 2023, voting will be open. This page on Meta-wiki outlines information on how to vote using SecurePoll.

Who can vote?

The eligibility requirements for this vote are the same as for the Wikimedia Board of Trustees elections. See the voter information page for more details about voter eligibility. If you are an eligible voter, you can use your Wikimedia account to access the voting server.

What happens after the vote?

Votes will be scrutinized by an independent group of volunteers, and the results will be published on Wikimedia-l, the Movement Strategy Forum, Diff and on Meta-wiki. Voters will again be able to vote and share concerns they have about the guidelines. The Board of Trustees will look at the levels of support and concerns raised as they look at how the Enforcement Guidelines should be ratified or developed further.

Desktop improvements. A new change is coming!

Next week (the week of February 6), the Wikimedia Foundation Web team will move some links from the side menu ("sidebar") to a new menu on other side of the screen.

This will make it easier to intuitively use all the links and tools within our interface. The table of contents will also appear a bit higher up the screen because the sidebar will be shorter. The latter change would mostly be interesting for editors. This is because readers use the sidebar much more rarely.

Why we are changing this

The interface does not distinguish between the links and tools that are relevant to the website and the links and tools that are relevant to a single page. Main page, random page, recent changes, are in the first group. What links here, related changes, cite this page, belong to the second one. This mix is confusing to new readers. Also new editors are not familiar with what each link does. Mixing these groups makes it less likely for people to explore these tools naturally.

This change also addresses the concern for the location of the table of contents. Previously, some editors using an earlier version of Vector 2022 told us that because the table of contents appeared below the sidebar, it was placed too much down below the page. After this change, the sidebar will be shorter and thus will shift the table of contents further up in the page. Also, this change will reduce the white space on the page by using more of the space for the display of tools.

Gadgets' compatibility

Technically skilled editors may need to update some gadgets and user scripts. Some of these might become redundant or obsolete. We provide support for users who would like to maintain the compatibility. Please explore this section of our documentation for more information on gadget compatibility.

Let's work together

Community feedback-cycle about updating the Wikimedia Terms of Use starts

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.

Hello everyone,

Wikimedia Foundation Legal Department is organizing a feedback-cycle with community members to discuss updating the Wikimedia Terms of Use.

The Terms of Use (ToU) are the legal terms that govern the use of websites hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation. We will be gathering your feedback on a draft proposal from February through April. The draft will be translated into several languages, with written feedback accepted in any language.

This update comes in response to several things:

  • Implementing the Universal Code of Conduct
  • Updating project text to the Creative Commons BY-SA 4.0 license
  • Proposal for better addressing undisclosed paid editing
  • Bringing our terms in line with current and recently passed laws affecting the Foundation, including the European Digital Services Act

As part of the feedback cycle two office hours will be held, the first on March 2, the second on April 4.

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "เพิ่มหัวข้อ" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.

Daily edit completion rate by test group: DiscussionTools (test group) and MobileFrontend overlay (control group)

An A/B test for เครื่องมือช่วยเหลือการอภิปราย on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.

New Project: Edit Check

The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "เผยแพร่การเปลี่ยนแปลง". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please watch that page for more information. You can join a conference call on 3 March 2023 to learn more.
