เฮโรอีน (Heroin or diacetylmorphine (INN)) เป็นสารกึ่งสังเคราะห์ของโอปิออยด์ มันเป็นอนุพันธ์ 3,6-ไดอะซิทิล ของ มอร์ฟีน (เรียกว่า ไดอะซิทิลมอร์ฟีน) ซึ่งเป็นสารที่ได้จากฝิ่น และถูกสังเคราะห์โดยการอะซิทิเลชัน (acetylation) ในรูปเกลือไฮโดรคลอไรด์ เป็นผลึกสีขาว ซึ่งเรียกว่า ไดอะซิทิลมอร์ฟีนไฮโดรคลอไรด์ เป็นสารเสพติดอย่างรุนแรงเมื่อเทียบกับสารประกอบเคมีตัวอื่น ๆ เฮโรอีนจัดอยู่ในกลุ่มยาเสพติดประเภท Schedules I และ IV ของ อนุสัญญาว่าด้วยยาเสพติด (Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs)[1] ในสหรัฐอเมริกาถูกผลิตและขายอย่างผิดกฎหมาย แต่เป็นยาตามใบสั่งแพทย์ในประเทศอังกฤษ เฮโรอีนมีชื่อเรียกกันในหมู่นักเสพดังนี้ dope junk smack และ H
