ปอนด์สเตอร์ลิง (อังกฤษ: pound sterling) (สัญลักษณ์: £; รหัส ISO 4217: GBP) เป็นสกุลเงินตราอย่างเป็นทางการของสหราชอาณาจักร, เจอร์ซีย์, เกิร์นซีย์, ไอล์ออฟแมน, ยิบรอลตาร์, เกาะเซาท์จอร์เจียและหมู่เกาะเซาท์แซนด์วิช, บริติชแอนตาร์กติกเทร์ริทอรี[3][4] และตริสตันดากูนยา[5] หนึ่งปอนด์สเตอร์ลิงสามารถแบ่งย่อยได้เป็น 100 เพนนี ปอนด์สเตอร์ลิงยังเป็นสกุลเงินที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดที่ถูกใช้จนถึงปัจจุบัน

ประวัติ

เงินปอนด์เริ่มใช้มาตั้งแต่สมัยโบราณ กล่าวคือ เมื่อประมาณ พ.ศ. 1320 ราชอาณาจักรซักซอน (อาจเรียกว่าพวกอังกฤษสมัยโบราณก็ได้ แต่ความจริงแล้ว ซักซอนไม่ได้เป็นบรรพบุรุษโดยตรงของอังกฤษปัจจุบัน) ได้ทำเหรียญกษาปณ์ขึ้นจากโลหะเงินแท้ น้ำหนัก 1 ปอนด์ ซึ่งได้เหรียญเงินเป็นจำนวน 240 อัน เรียกว่าเหรียญสเตอร์ลิง และด้วยน้ำหนักเท่ากับ 1 ปอนด์นี้เอง เมื่อต้องใช้จ่ายเงิน ก็จะบอกค่าเป็นจำนวนปอนด์ของเหรียญสเตอร์ลิง (pounds of sterlings) และภายหลังเรียกสั้นลงว่า ปอนด์สเตอร์ลิง (pound sterling)

ครั้นเมื่อพวกนอร์มัน (Norman) เข้ามาครองอำนาจแทนพวกซักซอน พวกนี้ได้แบ่งหน่วยเงินตราปอนด์ออกเป็นหน่วยย่อย คือ 1 ปอนด์ แบ่งได้ 20 ชิลลิง (shilling) และ 1 ชิลลิง ยังแบ่งได้อีกเป็น 12 เพนนี (เอกพจน์ penny, พหูพจน์ pennies หรือ pence)

เรื่องค่าของปอนด์นั้นยังไม่จบ เพราะตัวย่อของปอนด์นั้นมีปัญหา เมื่ออักษรย่อของปอนด์นั้น ใช้ lb หรือ £ ซึ่งทำให้สับสน และอักษรย่อ หรือเครื่องหมายดังกล่าว มีที่มาจากคำว่า libra ในภาษาละตินสมัยกลาง ความจริงแล้ว คำว่า ลิบรา ก็คือ ตาชั่ง (คำเดียวกับที่เรียกกลุ่มดาวราศีตุล) สำหรับอักษร £. นั้น ก็คือตัว L นั่นเอง (ใช้ได้ทั้งสองแบบ) ในตำราเก่าๆ บางครั้งเขียน l. เฉยๆ ก็มี

ส่วนชิลลิงนั้น ใช้อักษรย่อว่า s เฉย ๆ ตัวอักษรนี้ไม่ได้ย่อจาก shilling แต่มาจาก solidus ในภาษาละติน สำหรับหน่วยเล็กสุด คือ เพนนีนั้น ย่อเป็น d เพราะในภาษาละตินนั้น หน่วยเล็กสุดของค่าเงินคือ denarius เราจึงอาจพบการเขียนบอกจำนวนเงินเป็น 2l. 8s. 5d. นั่นคือ 2 ปอนด์ 8 ชิลลิง กับอีก 5 เพนนี

สำหรับเหรียญชิลลิงนั้น มีค่าเท่ากับ 12 เพนนี เดิมเรียกว่าเทสทัน หรือเทสทูน (teston, testoon) เริ่มมีครั้งแรกเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2047 มีการแกะสลักเป็นพระพักตร์ของพระเจ้าเฮนรีที่ 7 ครั้นในสมัยรัชกาลพระเจ้าเฮนรีที่ 8 ก็ยังคงใช้เหรียญค่านี้ แต่เรียกใหม่ว่า ชิลลิง ส่วนที่มาของชื่อนั้น จริงๆ แล้วยังไม่ปรากฏหลักฐานแน่ชัด แต่เข้าใจว่าเรียกตามเหรียญของพวกอังโกล-ซักซอน คือสคีลลิง (scilling, scylling) และบางรัฐของเยอรมนีก็มีการผลิตเหรียญกษาปณ์ที่เรียกว่า ชิลลิง (schilling) เหมือนกัน

ครั้นเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2464 ค่าของชิลลิงเป็นแต่ชื่อเรียกเท่านั้น ไม่ได้มีการผลิตเหรียญเงินค่าชิลลิงออกมา และอีก 26 ปีต่อมา มีการผลิตเหรียญชิลลิง โดยใช้โลหะผสมระหว่างทองแดง และนิกเกิล เรียกว่าโลหะคิวโพรนิเกิล เมื่อถึงวันที่ 15 กุมภาพันธ์ พ.ศ. 2514 อังกฤษได้เปลี่ยนมาตราเงินแบบเทียบร้อยตามหลักสากล คือ 100 เพนนี เป็น 1 ปอนด์ โดยไม่ใช้หน่วยชิลลิงอีก ทำให้อักษรย่อชิลลิงจึงหมดไป อักษรย่อเพนนี เปลี่ยนจาก d เป็น p ซึ่งย่อมาจากคำว่าเพนนี (penny) โดยตรง
