Firstly my apologies for not writing in Thai. Hopefully someone can translate and/or repeat this message for those who have difficulty with English.
รายชื่อนกที่พบในประเทศไทย has been updated to be consistent with the List of birds of Thailand and with Avibase List (Clements version 2018 and Thailand selected). It is therefore now possible to validate the accuracy and completeness of the update by comparing it with either of the two lists referred to above. Where species are missing, it is due to the fact that Avibase has, as yet, no Thai name for them. Also to be entered in the near future, are the descriptions of the new families entered during the recent update.
A major, as yet, unresolved issue is the index name and common name of the 15 new families entered during the update; the names currently entered are temporary only and need to be replaced by names agreed by the Thai birding community. The most difficult naming problems arise when two families can't be distinguished from another solely by the name of the largest group of species within them. Here, group size is defined as the number of different species within that group.
For example, both Scotocercidae (Bush warblers and allies ) and Locustellidae (Grass birds and allies) have the same largest group, namely นกกระจ้อย .
Likewise Timaliidae (Tree-babblers, scimitar-babblers, and allies) and Pellorneidae (Ground babblers and allies) have the same largest group, namely นกกินแมลง. Even the addition of นกระวังไพร to Timaliidae does not resolve possible confusion completely.
So the question to be resolved is how do you get an experienced group of Thai birders together to resolve the naming problem?
