ลูกแมว เป็นแมววัยเยาว์ โดยหลังจากที่ลูกแมวเกิด ลูกแมวจะแสดงความแบเบาะระยะแรกและต้องพึ่งพาแม่เพื่อความอยู่รอด โดยปกติแล้วพวกมันจะไม่ลืมตาเป็นเวลาเจ็ดถึงสิบวัน หลังจากนั้นประมาณสองสัปดาห์ ลูกแมวจะพัฒนาอย่างรวดเร็วและเริ่มสำรวจโลกภายนอกที่หลบภัย หลังจากนั้นอีกสามถึงสี่สัปดาห์ พวกมันจะเริ่มกินอาหารแข็งและมีฟันน้ำนมงอกขึ้นมา อนึ่ง ลูกแมวบ้านเป็นสัตว์สังคมอย่างมากและมักจะชอบมิตรภาพของมนุษย์

ศัพทมูลวิทยา[แก้]

ในภาษาอังกฤษ คำว่า "kitten" ที่หมายถึงลูกแมวมาจากคำภาษาอังกฤษสมัยกลางคือ kitoun ซึ่งมาจากภาษาฝรั่งเศสในยุคแรกคือ chitoun หรือ cheton[1] ส่วนเสือวัยเยาว์จะเรียกว่า "cub" มากกว่า kitten ซึ่งทั้งสองคำ (แต่โดยทั่วไปมักเรียกว่า "kitten") อาจใช้กับลูกสัตว์วงศ์เสือและแมวป่าที่มีขนาดเล็กกว่า เช่น โอเซลอต, แคราแคล และสกุลลิงซ์[2]

ครอกสัตว์ตระกูลแมวมักประกอบด้วยลูกแมวสองถึงห้าตัว[3] แต่เป็นที่ทราบกันว่าครอกมีได้ทั้งหนึ่งถึงมากกว่าสิบตัว[4] โดยทั่วไปลูกแมวจะเกิดหลังจากระยะมีครรภ์ระหว่าง 64 ถึง 67 วัน โดยมีความยาวเฉลี่ย 66 วัน[3] เมื่อลูกแมวเกิด ลูกแมวจะออกมาในส่วนที่คล้ายถุงที่เรียกว่าเยื่อถุงน้ำคร่ำ ซึ่งแม่แมวกัดและกินเข้าไป[5]
