กาเรล ชาเปก (อังกฤษ: Karel Čapek, ภาษาเช็ก: [ˈkarɛl ˈtʃapɛk] ( ฟังเสียง); 9 มกราคม พ.ศ. 2433 – 25 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2481) เป็นนักเขียนชาวเช็ก เขาเป็นผู้ริเริ่มใช้คำว่า robot[1] (หุ่นยนต์) เป็นครั้งแรก ซึ่งปรากฏอยู่ในบทละครเรื่อง R.U.R.
กาเรล ชาเปก เกิดที่หมู่บ้านแห่งหนึ่งในโบฮีเมีย จักรวรรดิออสเตรีย-ฮังการี (ปัจจุบันคือ สาธารณรัฐเช็ก) เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2433 เขาเป็นคนสุดท้องจากจำนวนพี่น้อง 3 คน สมัยยังเป็นวัยรุ่น ชาเปกสนใจวิชาทัศนศิลป์ โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งแนวคิดคิวบิสม์ เขาเข้าศึกษาระดับมหาวิทยาลัยที่มหาวิทยาลัยชาลส์ที่กรุงปราก และที่ซอร์บอนน์ในฝรั่งเศส ชาเปกไม่ได้เข้ารับราชการทหารตอนสงครามโลกครั้งที่หนึ่ง เนื่องจากมีปัญหาที่กระดูกสันหลัง หลังสำเร็จการศึกษา เขาทำงานเป็นนักหนังสือพิมพ์ และเริ่มเขียนหนังสือร่วมกับพี่ชาย โจเซฟ ชาเปก ในปี พ.ศ. 2463 ชาเปกได้ตีพิมพ์ R.U.R. นอกจากแนววิทยาศาสตร์แล้ว ชาเปกยังเขียนบทความทางการเมืองอีกด้วย โดยเขามีแนวคิดต่อต้านระบอบนาซีและฟาสซิสต์ เขาปฏิเสธที่จะลี้ภัยในช่วงที่เชโกสโลวาเกียกำลังจะถูกนาซียึด ด้วยปัญหาสุขภาพ ชาเปกเสียชีวิตที่ปราก เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2481 จากอาการปอดบวม รวมอายุได้ 48 ปี โจเซฟ ชาเปก พี่ชายของเขาเสียชีวิตในอีก 7 ปีต่อมา ที่ค่ายกักกันเบอร์เกน-เบลเซน ทางตอนเหนือของเยอรมนี
ประวัติ
กาเรล ชาเปก เกิดเมื่อ ค.ศ. 1890 ในหมู่บ้านบนเทือกเขาของโบฮีเมียชื่อว่า Malé Svatoňovice มารดาเขาเป็นคนอ่อนไหวและเจ้าอารมณ์ ส่วนบิดาไม่ค่อยได้ใกล้ชิดแต่ก็เอ็นดูเขา กาเรลเป็นบุตรคนเล็กจากพี่น้องรวมสามคน กาเรลรักษาความสัมพันธ์อันดีกับพี่ชาย Josef โดยอาศัยอยู่ด้วยกันและเขียนงานด้วยกันมาตลอดชีวิต[5]
กาเรลเริ่มหลงไหลในทัศนศิลป์เมื่อเป็นวัยรุ่น โดยเฉพาะลัทธิคิวบิสม์ เขาศึกษาที่ Charles University ในกรุง Prague และที่ Sorbonne ในกรุงปารีส[6] เขาได้รับการยกเว้นการเกณฑ์ทหารเนื่องจากปัญหากระดูกสันหลังซึ่งเป็นปัญหาเรื้อรังตลอดชีวิตของเขา กาเรลอาศัยอยู่ในกรงุปรากช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่หนึ่ง และความเห็นทางการเมืองของเขาเปลี่ยนไปเพราะสงคราม ในฐานะสื่อมวลชนรุ่นใหม่เขาเริ่มเขียนงานในหัวข้อชาตินิยม, ระบบรวบอำนาจเบ็ดเสร็จ[7] และบริโภคนิยม
