ริ้นน้ำจืด (อังกฤษ: chironomids หรือ non-biting midges) อยู่ในวงศ์ Chironomidae อับดับ Diptera พบได้ทั่วโลก มีลักษณะใกล้เคียงกับริ้นน้ำเค็มในวงศ์ Ceratopogonidae ริ้นดำ ในวงศ์ Simuliidae หลายชนิดคล้ายกับ ยุง มาก แตกต่างที่ไม่มีเกล็ดที่ปีกและปากที่ยาว มีขนาดยาว 1-9 มิลลิเมตร จำแนกชนิดแล้วมากกว่า 5,000 ชนิด ตัวผู้มีหนวดแบบพู่ขน ตัวเต็มวัยบางครั้งเรียกว่า "lake flies" ในประเทศ แคนาดา "sand flies", "muckleheads",[2] or "muffleheads"[3] ในหลายภูมิภาคในประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา "blind mosquitoes" or "chizzywinks" ในรัฐ ฟลอริดา USA[4].

พฤติกรรมและลักษณะการจำแนก[แก้]

ตัวอ่อนพบได้ในน้ำหรือใกล้ ๆ น้ำเกือบทุกที่ เช่น โพรงต้นไม้ พืชเน่าเปื่อย ดิน น้ำเสีย และในที่มีน้ำขังชั่วคราว เป็นต้น ตัวอ่อน ของ บางชนิดมีสีแดงเข้ม เนื่องจากมีการสะสม hemoglobin มักเรียกว่าหนอนแดง (bloodworms) [5]

ตัวเต็มวัยอาจกลายเป็นแมลงศัตรูรบกวนเมื่อพวกมันออกจากดักแด้เป็นตัวเต็มวัยเป็นจำนวนมาก โดยสร้างความเสียหายให้แก่สีทา อิฐ และ พื้นผิวอื่นๆด้วยมูลของพวกมัน และเมื่อพวกมันตายสามารถกลายเป็นกองของสิ่งปฏิกูล พวกมันสามารถก่อให้เกิดการแพ้ในคนที่ไวต่อการแพ้ได้[6]

นิเวศวิทยา[แก้]

ตัวอ่อนและดักแด้เป็นอาหารที่สำคัญของ ปลา เช่น ปลา trout เป็นต้น สัตว์น้ำอื่น ๆ สัตว์ครึ่งบกครึ่งน้ำ เช่น rough-skinned newt.[7] และยังถูกใช้เป็นเหยื่อตกปลา trout โดยนักตกปลา ตัวเต็มวัยยังคงเป็นอาหารของปลา และนกกินแมลง เช่น นก swallows และนก martins

พวกมันยังมีความสำคัญโดยเป็นตัวบ่งชี้สภาพแวดล้อมของแหล่งที่มันอยู่อาศัย ฟอสซิลของพวกมันยังสามารถเป็นตัวบ่งชี้การเปลี่ยนแปลงสภาพแวดล้อมและสภาพภูมิอากาศในอดีต[8]

วงศ์ย่อยและสกุล[แก้]

วงศ์นี้แบ่งเป็นวงศ์ย่อยทั้งหมด 11 วงศ์ย่อย: Aphroteniinae, Buchonomyiinae, Chilenomyinae, Chironominae, Diamesinae, Orthocladiinae, Podonominae, Prodiamesinae, Tanypodinae, Telmatogetoninae และ Usambaromyiinae.[9][10] ชนิดส่วนใหญ่อยู่ใน Chironominae, Orthocladiinae และ Tanypodinae ส่วน Diamesinae, Podonominae, Prodiamesinae และ Telmatogetoninae เป็นวงศ์ย่อยขนาดกลางที่มีสิบถึงร้อยกว่าชนิด ส่วนสี่วงศ์ย่อยที่เหลือมีน้องกว่าแต่ละชนิดถึงห้าชนิด
