การแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงบวก[1] (อังกฤษ: Positive illusions) เป็นทัศนคติเชิงบวกไม่สมจริง ที่มีต่อตนเองหรือต่อบุคคลที่ใกล้ชิด เป็นการแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดในรูปแบบของการหลอกลวงตนเอง (self-deception) หรือการยกย่องตนเอง (self-enhancement) ที่ทำให้รู้สึกดี ดำรงรักษาความเคารพตน (self-esteem) หรือช่วยกำจัดความไม่สบายใจอย่างน้อยก็ในช่วงเวลาสั้น ๆ มีรูปแบบใหญ่ ๆ 3 อย่างคือ ความเหนือกว่าเทียม (illusory superiority) ความเอนเอียงโดยการมองในแง่ดี (optimism bias) และการแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดว่าควบคุมได้ (illusion of control)[2] ส่วนคำภาษาอังกฤษว่า "positive illusions" เกิดใช้เป็นครั้งแรกในงานปี 1988 ของเทย์เลอร์และบราวน์[2] โดยมีการกล่าวถึงภายหลังว่า "แบบจำลองสุขภาพจิตปี 1988 ของเทย์เลอร์และบราวน์ยืนยันว่า การแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงบวกบางอย่างแพร่หลายเป็นอย่างสูงในความคิดปกติ และเป็นตัวพยากรณ์ค่าเกณฑ์ที่ปกติสัมพันธ์กับสุขภาพจิตที่ดี"[3]
มีข้อถกเถียงที่ยังไม่ยุติว่า บุคคลแสดงปรากฏการณ์นี้อย่างสม่ำเสมอในขอบเขตแค่ไหน และปรากฏการณ์นี้มีประโยชน์อะไรกับบุคคลเหล่านั้น[2][4][5][6]
ประเภท

ส่วนความเอนเอียงโดยการมองในแง่ดี (optimism bias) เป็นความโน้มเอียงที่จะประเมินโอกาสประสบเหตุการณ์ดี ๆ เช่น การชอบงานแรกที่ทำ หรือมีลูกที่มีพรสวรรค์ เกินความจริง และประเมินโอกาสประสบเหตุการณ์ร้าย ๆ เช่น การหย่า หรือเกิดโรคเรื้อรัง ต่ำกว่าความจริง และเกิดแม้ในการประเมินเวลาที่ต้องใช้ทำงานต่าง ๆ โดยประเมินต่ำกว่าความจริง
แหล่งเกิด

ประโยชน์และโทษ
การแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงบวกอาจจะมีทั้งประโยชน์และโทษต่อบุคคล และยังเป็นเรื่องถกเถียงที่ยังไม่ยุติว่า ปรากฏการณ์นี้เป็นการปรับตัวทางวิวัฒนาการหรือไม่[4] คือปรากฏการณ์นี้อาจจะมีผลดีต่อสุขภาพเพราะช่วยบุคคลให้จัดการความเครียดได้ หรือสนับสนุนให้ทำงานให้สำเร็จ[4] แต่ในด้านตรงกันข้าม การคาดหวังเชิงบวกเกินความจริง อาจขัดขวางไม่ให้ทำการป้องกันที่เหมาะสมกับเรื่องเสี่ยงต่อสุขภาพ[21] งานวิจัยไม่นานนี้จริง ๆ ให้หลักฐานว่า คนที่แปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงบวก อาจจะได้ทั้งประโยชน์ในระยะสั้นและโทษในระยะยาว โดยเฉพาะก็คือ การยกย่องตนเองไม่มีสหสัมพันธ์กับความสำเร็จทางการศึกษา หรืออัตราการจบปริญญาในมหาวิทยาลัย[20]
สุขภาพจิต

ความเชื่อเชิงบวกบ่อยครั้งช่วยให้ทำงานได้มากกว่าและทนกว่า ซึ่งถ้าไม่เชื่อก็อาจจะเลิกไปกลางคัน[26] คือเมื่อเชื่อว่าตนสามารถทำเป้าหมายที่ยากให้สำเร็จ ความคาดหวังนี้บ่อยครั้งจะช่วยให้เกิดกำลังใจและความกระตือรือร้น มีผลเป็นความก้าวหน้าที่ถ้าไม่เชื่อก็จะเป็นไปไม่ได้ ปรากฏการณ์นี้ อาจจะอ้างได้ว่าเป็นการปรับตัว เพราะช่วยให้คนมีความหวังเมื่อเผชิญกับความเสี่ยงที่ควบคุมไม่ได้[27]

แต่งานวิจัยหลังจากนั้นกลับพบว่า การแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดทุกอย่าง จะเชิงบวกหรือเชิงลบก็ดี สัมพันธ์กับอาการซึมเศร้า[29] และก็มีงานศึกษาอื่น ๆ อีกด้วยที่ปฏิเสธความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงบวกกับสุขภาพจิต ความเป็นสุข หรือความพอใจในชีวิต โดยยืนยันว่า การรับรู้ความจริงที่ถูกต้อง เข้ากับความสุขในชีวิต[6][30][31]
ในงานปี 1992 ที่ศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างความเคารพในตน (self-esteem) กับการแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงบวก นักวิจัยพบกลุ่มคนที่เคารพในตนสูงโดยที่ไม่แปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงบวก และคนเหล่านี้ก็ไม่ได้เศร้าซึม ไม่ได้เป็นโรคประสาท ไม่ได้ปรับตัวเข้ากับชีวิตได้ไม่ดี ไม่ได้ผิดปกติทางบุคลิกภาพ และดังนั้น จึงสรุปว่า การแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงบวกไม่จำเป็นต่อความเคารพในตน และเมื่อเทียบกับกลุ่มที่มีทั้งการแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงบวกและความเคารพในตนสูง กลุ่มที่ไม่แปลสิ่งเร้าผิดที่เคารพในตนสูง สามารถวิเคราะห์วิจารณ์ตนเองได้ดีกว่า มีบุคลิกภาพที่เข้ากันดีกว่า และมีระดับ psychoticism ที่ต่ำกว่า[32]
งานวิเคราะห์อภิมานที่วิเคราะห์งานศึกษา 118 งานที่มีผู้ร่วมการทดลอง 7,013 คนพบว่า มีงานศึกษาที่สนับสนุนแนวคิดของสัจนิยมเหตุซึมเศร้า (depressive realism) มากกว่าไม่สนับสนุน แต่งานเหล่านี้มีคุณภาพแย่กว่า ใช้ตัวอย่างที่ไม่ได้เป็นคนไข้ (non-clinical) ทำการอนุมานโดยอุปนัยง่าย ๆ กว่า ให้ผู้ร่วมการทดลองแจ้งผลวัดเองแทนที่จะใช้การสัมภาษณ์ และใช้วิธีการทางความเอนเอียงโดยการใส่ใจ (attentional bias) หรือการประเมินโอกาสที่จะเกิดขึ้น (judgment of contingency) เป็นวิธีวัดค่าสัจนิยมเหตุซึมเศร้า เพราะว่าวิธีการเช่นการระลึกถึงคำวิจารณ์และการประเมินผลงาน ซึ่งเป็นวิธีการที่สามารถใช้วัดได้เหมือนกัน มักจะแสดงผลที่คัดค้านสัจนิยมเหตุซึมเศร้า[33]
สุขภาพกาย
นอกจากช่วยให้ปรับตัวทางจิตได้ในสถานการณ์ต่าง ๆ[34] ความสามารถสร้างและรักษาความเชื่อเมื่อเผชิญเหตุร้าย ก็จะมีประโยชน์ต่อสุขภาพด้วย งานวิจัยแสดงว่า ชายที่ติดเชื้อเอชไอวี หรือได้วินิจฉัยว่าเกิดโรคเอดส์แล้ว และประเมินความสามารถควบคุมสภาวะสุขภาพของตนอย่างไม่สมจริงเชิงบวก ใช้เวลานานกว่าที่จะปรากฏอาการต่าง ๆ มีการดำเนินของโรคที่ช้ากว่า และมีผลดีทางใจอื่น ๆ เช่นการยอมรับความจริง[35]
โทษที่เป็นไปได้
มีความเสี่ยงที่เป็นไปได้หลายอย่างถ้ามีการแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงบวกเกี่ยวกับคุณสมบัติของตนและสิ่งที่อาจจะเกิดในอนาคต แรกสุดก็คือ อาจจะตั้งตนให้มีเรื่องแปลกใจแบบไม่น่ายินดีในอนาคตที่ไม่สามารถรับได้ เมื่อความเชื่อเชิงบวกที่ไม่สมจริงไม่ตรงกับความจริง และอาจจะต้องจัดการปัญหาที่ตามมา แต่ว่า งานวิจัยเสนอว่า โดยมากแล้ว ผลลบเช่นนี้ไม่เกิดขึ้น คือ ความเชื่อของคนจะตรงกับความจริงมากกว่าในช่วงต่าง ๆ ที่การยอมรับความจริงจะช่วยตนได้ดี เช่น เมื่อวางแผนในเบื้องต้น หรือเมื่อจะต้องรับผิดชอบหรือได้รับการตอบสนองที่ไม่ดีจากสิ่งแวดล้อม นอกจากนั้นแล้ว ถึงจะเกิดเหตุการณ์ร้ายหรือความล้มเหลว ก็ไม่ใช่ว่าจะเสียโอกาสทุกอย่างไป เพราะว่าความเชื่อเชิงบวกเกินจริงก็จะช่วยให้ทำการต่อ ๆ ไปได้[36]

โทษอย่างที่ 4 อาจเกิดขึ้นเมื่อรู้ว่าความเก่งจริงของตนไม่ตรงกับความคิด เพราะว่าสามารถทำลายความมั่นใจ แล้วทำให้ทำการได้แย่ลงในสถานการณ์ต่าง ๆ เช่น การศึกษาในมหาวิทยาลัยเป็นต้น[20]
ดังนั้น แม้ว่าการแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงบวกจะมีประโยชน์ในระยะสั้น แต่ก็มาพร้อมกับโทษในระยะยาว นอกจากนั้นแล้ว ยังปรากฏหลักฐานเชื่อมโยงกับความเคารพตนและการอยู่เป็นสุขที่แย่ลง การหลงตัวเอง (narcissism) และความสำเร็จทางการศึกษาที่แย่ลงในนักเรียนนักศึกษา[20][39][40]
การแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงลบ
แม้ว่าจะมีงานศึกษาทางวิชาการในเรื่องการแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงบวกมากกว่า แต่ก็ยังมีการแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงลบอย่างเป็นระบบที่ปรากฏในสถานการณ์ที่ต่างกันเล็กน้อย[2] ยกตัวอย่างเช่น แม้ว่านักศึกษามหาวิทยาลัยจะบอกว่าตนมีโอกาสที่จะมีชีวิตจนกระทั่งอายุ 70 มากกว่าโดยเฉลี่ย แต่ก็เชื่อว่ามีโอกาสที่จะมีชีวิตอยู่จนถึงอายุ 100 น้อยกว่าโดยเฉลี่ย คนมักจะคิดว่าตนสามารถมากกว่าคนโดยเฉลี่ยในงานที่ง่ายเช่นการขี่จักรยานสองล้อ และคิดว่าสามารถน้อยกว่าคนโดยเฉลี่ยในงานที่ยากเช่นการขี่จักรยานล้อเดียว[41] และปรากฏการณ์หลังนี้เรียกว่า ปรากฏการณ์แย่กว่าโดยเฉลี่ย (Worse-than-average effect)[42] ดังนั้น โดยทั่วไปแล้ว คนมักจะประเมินตัวเองสูงเกินจริง เมื่อตัวเองอยู่ในระดับสูงจริง ๆ และมักจะประเมินตนเองต่ำเกินจริง เมื่อตัวเองอยู่ในระดับต่ำจริง ๆ[2]
การบรรเทา
ทฤษฎีสัจนิยมเหตุซึมเศร้า (depressive realism) เสนอว่า คนซึมเศร้ามองตนเองและโลกอย่างเป็นจริงมากกว่าคนมีสุขภาพจิตดี ธรรมชาติของความซึมเศร้าดูเหมือนจะมีบทบาทในการลดการแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงบวก ยกตัวอย่างเช่น คนที่เคารพตนน้อย หรือซึมเศร้าเล็กน้อย หรือว่าทั้งสองอย่าง จะมองตัวเองอย่างสมดุลกว่า[43] และโดยนัยเดียวกัน คนซึมเศร้าเล็กน้อย จะไม่ค่อยประเมินความสามารถควบคุมเหตุการณ์เกินความเป็นจริง[44] และไม่ประเมินเหตุการณ์ข้างหน้าอย่างเอนเอียง[45] แต่ว่า สิ่งที่ค้นพบเหล่านี้ อาจจะไม่ใช่เพราะว่าคนซึมเศร้าแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดน้อยกว่าคนอื่น มีงานศึกษาเช่นงานในปี 1989 ที่แสดงว่าคนซึมเศร้าเชื่อว่าตนไม่สามารถควบคุมเหตุการณ์ได้ แม้ว่าจริง ๆ จะสามารถ ดังนั้น การมองเห็นความเป็นจริงจึงไม่ได้ดีกว่าโดยทั่วไป[46]
งานวิจัยในปี 2007 เสนอว่า คนซึมเศร้าเอนเอียงมองโลกในแง่ร้าย ซึ่งมีผลเป็น "สัจนิยมเหตุซึมเศร้า" และจึงประเมินความจริงได้ในกรณีที่ไม่สามารถควบคุมเหตุการณ์ได้[47] งานวิจัยในปี 2005 และ 2007 พบว่า การประเมินเกินความจริงของคนที่ไม่ซึมเศร้า จะเกิดขึ้นก็ต่อเมื่อมีเวลาระหว่างการแสดงเหตุการณ์กับการประเมินผลนานเพียงพอ ซึ่งบอกเป็นนัยว่า เป็นอย่างนี้เพราะว่าบุคคลปกติจะรวมเอาข้อมูลของเหตุการณ์ด้านอื่น ๆ เข้าในการพิจารณาด้วยโดยไม่เหมือนกับคนซึมเศร้า คือคนซึมเศร้าไม่สามารถประมวลข้อมูลได้เหมือนกับคนปกติ[48]
มีสมมติฐาน 2 อย่างในวรรณกรรมเรื่องการป้องกันปัญหาของการแปลสิ่งเร้าผิดเชิงบวก คือ
- ให้ลดระดับลงจนถึงขั้นที่ไม่มีผลลบแต่ได้รับผลบวก[49]
- เนื่องจากการดูสถานการณ์บวกเกินจริงไม่มีในขั้นการพยามยามเพื่อตัดสินใจ แต่มีเมื่อลงมือทำ ดังนั้น ก่อนที่จะลงมือทำอะไรที่สำคัญ ควรจะพิจารณาตัดสินใจให้ดีก่อนว่าจะทำได้หรือไม่หรือมีผลลบอย่างไร[50]
นักวิจัยผู้หนึ่งตั้งสมมติฐานว่า การบิดเบือนความจริงเชิงบวกแบบเล็กน้อยอาจจะดีที่สุด เพราะว่า คนที่คิดบิดเบือนในระดับนี้ อาจจะมีสุขภาพจิตดีที่สุด[49]
