Bacillus subtilis เป็นแบคทีเรียแกรมบวกคะตะเลสบวก พบในดินและทางเดินอาหารของสัตว์เคี้ยวเอื้องและมนุษย์ เป็นสมาชิกของสกุล Bacillus เป็นรูปแท่งและสามารถสร้าง endospore ที่ทนทานและป้องกันได้ดี ทำให้สามารถทนต่อสภาพแวดล้อมที่ร้ายแรงได้ ในสมัยก่อนได้รับการจัดอันดับเป็น obligate aerobe แม้ว่ามีหลักฐานว่าเป็น anaerobe facultative Bacillus subtilis ถือได้ว่าเป็นแบคทีเรียกรัมบวกที่ได้รับการศึกษามากที่สุด และมักใช้เป็นสิ่งมีชีวิตต้นแบบเพื่อศึกษาการจำลองแบบของโครโมโซมของแบคทีเรียและความแตกต่างของเซลล์ เป็นหนึ่งในแบคทีเรียที่สำคัญในการผลิตเอนไซม์และใช้ในระดับอุตสาหกรรมโดยบริษัทด้านเทคโนโลยีชีวภาพ
