เอทโนล็อก ได้รับการเผยแพร่จากเอสไอแอล อินเทอร์เนชันนัล (อดีตรู้จักกันในชื่อ Summer Institute of Linguistics) องค์กรบริการภาษาศาสตร์คริสเตียนที่มีสำนักงานระหว่างประเทศที่แดลลัส รัฐเท็กซัส องค์นี้ศึกษาภาษาชนกลุ่มน้อยหลายภาษาเพื่ออำนวยความสะดวกในการพัฒนาภาษา และทำงานร่วมกับผู้พูดในชุมชนภาษาดังกล่าวเพื่อการแปลพระคัมภีร์บางส่วนเป็นภาษาของพวกเขา[3] แม้จะมีความสอดคล้องกับศาสนาคริสต์ของผู้จัดพิมพ์ก็ตาม เอทโนล็อก ไม่มีอคติทางอุดมการณ์หรือทางเทววิทยา[4]
