Please be informed that, since 2019, there have been reports of Thai authorities trying to subject Thai Wikipedians to fear of lawsuit regarding their contributions in topics concerning Thai politics and monarchy. These incidents have caused concerns about safety of our members.

Thai national security laws have severe jail terms and fines. The laws applicable and reportedly used against Thai Wikipedians include:

  • lese-majeste law
  • libel law
  • sedition law
  • Computer Crime Act B.E. 2560, regarding introduction of false information into computer systems.

General advice

  1. If interrogated, answer only what is necessary. Avoid answering irrelevant questions.
  2. Thai authority teams are often accompanied by psychiatrists or psychologists to assess your mentality.
  3. If authorities require you to sign a document, such as a memorandum of understanding (บันทึกความเข้าใจ), carefully read it before signing. If its contents are false or incorrect, you have the right to refuse it. In the worst-case scenario, you may be kept in their custody up to seven days.
  4. Ask the authorities to produce a judicial warrant (หมายศาล) for search, seizure, or extracting or copying your private information, such as your passwords. You have the right to refuse to cooperate if without such warrant.
  5. The authorities may ask for deletion of CCTV records. If possible, try to keep the records for future use as evidence.

Advice on contributions regarding sensitive topics

  1. Although Wikipedia is governed by the law of the United States, acts done in or in relation to Thailand can be punished by the law of Thailand.
  2. Never reveal your private information concerning Wikipedia. If you have ever done so, you can ask for a revision deletion (contact Thai Wikipedia administrators) or oversight (contact English Wikipedia).
  3. Use pseudonymous username that you have never used elsewhere.
  4. You may use another account specifically for editing problematic articles. This constitutes reasonable uses under WP:SOCK.
  5. You should not edit anonymously, as the IPs can be recorded and tracked.
