ฟอร์ด
นามสกุลฟอร์ด (อังกฤษ: Ford) มีต้นกำเนิดมาจากหลายแหล่ง ในบางกรณี นามสกุลฟอร์ดมีต้นกำเนิดมาจากชื่อของผู้ที่อาศัยอยู่ใกล้ฟอร์ด[1] จึงได้มาจากคำว่า ford ในภาษาอังกฤษเก่าและภาษาอังกฤษสมัยกลาง[2] ในบางกรณี นามสกุลฟอร์ดมีต้นกำเนิดมาจากสถานที่ต่างๆ ที่ชื่อ ford ตัวอย่างของสถานที่เหล่านี้ ได้แก่ ฟอร์ดในนอร์ทัมเบอร์แลนด์[3] (มาจากคำว่า ford ในภาษาอังกฤษเก่า),[4] สถานที่ในซัมเมอร์เซต,[5] ฟอร์ดในชรอปเชอร์[3] (มาจากคำว่า ford ในภาษาอังกฤษเก่า),[4] ฟอร์ดในเวสต์ซัสเซกซ์[3] (มาจากคำว่า ford ในภาษาอังกฤษเก่า)[4] และฟอร์ดในดอร์เซต (Forde)[3]
ในบางกรณี นามสกุลบางครั้งอาจเป็นรูปแบบภาษาอังกฤษของนามสกุลไอริชสามนามสกุล สองนามสกุลดังกล่าวคือ Mac Giolla na Naomh ซึ่งแปลว่า "บุตรชายของ Gilla na Naomh" และ Mac Conshámha ซึ่งแปลว่า "บุตรชายของ Conshnámha"[6] นามสกุลเหล่านี้ถูกแปลงเป็นภาษาอังกฤษว่า Ford เนื่องจากพยางค์สุดท้ายของนามสกุลเคยถูกเข้าใจผิดว่าเป็น áth ("ford")[3] ในภาษาไอริช อีกหนึ่งนามสกุลไอริชที่ถูกแปลงเป็นภาษาอังกฤษว่า Ford คือ Ó Fuartháin ซึ่งแปลว่า "ลูกหลานของ Fuarthán"[7] ชื่อบุคคล Fuartháin ซึ่งมาจากคำว่า fuar ("เย็น") ในภาษาไอริช เคยถูกใช้แทนคำว่า fuarathán ("หนูน้องฟอร์ดที่เย็นชา") ในภาษาไอริช ซึ่งทำให้ชื่อนี้ถูกแปลอย่างผิดพลาดว่า "ford"[8] นามสกุลไอริชสองนามสกุลแรกมีกลุ่มที่ถือกำเนิดในจังหวัดคอนนอต ในขณะที่นามสกุลไอริชสองนามสกุลแรกมีกลุ่มที่ถือกำเนิดในเคานตี้คอร์ก (ในจังหวัดมันสเตอร์)[9]
ในบางกรณี นามสกุลฟอร์ด เป็นรูปแบบอเมริกันของนามสกุลชาวยิวที่ฟังดูคล้ายกัน หรือไม่ก็เป็นรูปแบบแปลของนามสกุลเฟือร์ธ (Fürth) ในภาษาเยอรมัน[3] ตัวอย่างแรกของนามสกุล Ford ได้แก่ de la forda ในศตวรรษที่ 11, æt Fordan ในศตวรรษที่ 12, de la Forthe ในศตวรรษที่ 13 และ Foorde[5] และ de Furd ในศตวรรษที่ 15[10] นามสกุลฟอร์ด หากพบในไอร์แลนด์ อาจมีต้นกำเนิดมาจากชาวอังกฤษหรือไอริช เนื่องจากครอบครัวฟอร์ดหลายครอบครัวได้อพยพมายังไอร์แลนด์ในช่วงเวลาต่างๆ ในประวัติศาสตร์ ตัวอย่างเช่น ครอบครัวที่มีชื่อเสียงครอบครัวหนึ่งที่ใช้นามสกุลนี้ในเคาน์ตีมีธ ได้อพยพมาจากเดวอนในศตวรรษที่ 14[11] ในไอร์แลนด์ บันทึกการเกิดในปี ค.ศ. 1890 เผยให้เห็นว่านามสกุล Ford นั้นพบได้น้อยกว่านามสกุลฟอร์ด (Forde) มาก (เกิด 154 คน เทียบกับเพียง 39 คน)[12]
