เอโมจิ (ญี่ปุ่น:
เอโมจิมีต้นกำเนิดมาจากโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่ของญี่ปุ่นในปี พ.ศ. 2542 โดยนายชิเกตากะ คูริตะ ผู้มีอาชีพนักออกแบบของบริษัทผู้ให้บริการโทรศัพท์แห่งหนึ่งในญี่ปุ่นเพื่อช่วยให้การสื่อสารทางโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่นั้นง่ายขึ้น ในครั้งนั้นเขาได้คิดค้นเอโมจิรวมทั้งหมด 176 แบบ[4]
