Suwanwes House[แก้]

104 Years of the Suwanwes House

There is a well-known saying that to build a lasting 'house', you cannot rely on bricks and mortars alone, but you need 'family love and deep ties' that bind every member of the family together into a happy home.

As head of the family, "Moh Mee Kasemsuwan '', with his passion, had a big white house built on the 1.2 acres of land in Soi Kasemsant 3 on Rama I Road. Like a giant tree providing safety and shade to its inhabitants, the house has become a center of happiness, love, affection, and security for generations of all members of the Kasemsuwan family. This house was also the beginning of the fond memory of the origin of the famous and legendary "Moh Mee '' Thai traditional medicine.

This white house was to be called "Suwanwes" and comprised 3 more smaller houses for the children of "Moh Mee" built within the same compound. In the south, there was the main kitchen, the medicine factory, and the workers' quarter. In the north lay the Saen Saeb Canal which was then so clean and beautiful. There was a pier with steps down into the canal to help people commuting by boat which was the most common mode of transport at the time. During the high tide seasons, plenty of fish were available for members of the house to catch. Children also practiced swimming in the canal while boat vendors sold goods and food by the pier. Festive times such as the Loy Krathong festival were time for great fun for everyone in the house, especially workers who enjoyed floating "kratongs", a small floating basket, from the pier or rowing the house canoe named "Kasemsuwan", which was a very rare kind of vessel for anyone to own in those days, up and down the canal.

The familiar scene for residents of Soi Kasemsant 3 at the time was a very lively environment at "Baan Moh Mee '' where people always went and came all day. Therefore, guards were placed at the front gate to manage order and to greet visitors. One reason people came was because local residents could buy Moh Mee herbal medicine products - the famous refreshing drops, snuff and other formulae -- directly there. In addition, snack vendors from Banglamphoo, a very famous market at the time, came to buy many bundles of rice crisp sheets. This kind of snack was a by-product from rice cooking in a big wok for workers. Inside the compound, there was a garden of herbs and flowers to be used as ingredients to produce medicine from Moh Mee Factory. The scent and aroma therefore filled the factory every day. As a result, customers felt confident that they bought a freshly made medicine.

The construction of the "Suwanwes House" was completed long before the break-out of World War II. Upon its completion, the Kasemsuwan family moved from their old house on July 22nd Roundabout near ChinaTown to Soi Kasemsant 3. During the War, the Japanese Army occupied Thailand as a base in mainland Southeast Asia and a passage to Myanmar. The Allies then decided to bomb many strategic areas in Bangkok. To prepare for the bombing, two air raid bomb shelters were built inside the compound; the big one with the capacity to accommodate 8-10 persons and the small one for 4-5 persons. The latter has been excavated and put on show on the premises of Baan Moh Mee today. However, even if the War did not damage the "Suwanwes House '', tragically a bomb explosion nearby with some shrapnel killed an Indian guard of the house. To commemorate the loss of a loyal employee, the family had a life-size replica of the killed guard built and placed at a corner of the house where it still stands today.

The end of the War brought peace back to Thailand. The "Suwanwes House" resumed its manufacturing of Thai traditional medicine from Moh Mee formula. Later when it was time for Moh Mee's children to run the house, the house was renovated, the factory expanded into a two-storey building, a wall along the Saen Saeb Canal built and the pier removed. Moh Mee's sons - Khun Chaliew, Khun Prasert, Khun Boonlert and Khun Prasit - with their wives inherited the medicine formula and business where they worked in harmony to continue the success of their father's business.

The Modern House of The Rattanakosin Period[แก้]

In Bangkok during the reign of King Rama V, Western-style concrete homes were relatively rare. An innovative architectural approach was taken when the "Suwanwes House" was built, fusing a traditional Thai terrace with Western concrete design. This incorporation made it a singular and noteworthy residence that connected the eras of King Rama V and King Rama VI's reigns.

The "Suwanwes House," which was three stories tall and had a five-meter ceiling on the ground floor, was quite large. The top floor contained the family's attic, prayer room, and storage area; the second floor held the family's several bedrooms. The main floor featured the main living areas, which included a large living room, dining room, and kitchen; the basement was used to store herbs and medical supplies.

Interestingly, the foundation of the house was made of large logs rather than anchor piles. Amazingly, in spite of its pre-war construction and its close proximity to the Saen Saeb Canal, the basement did not leak even during the major 1942 Bangkok flood.

More than eight decades later, the "Suwanwes House" still stands tall, with its concrete walls intact and unbroken. The timeless teak flooring, steps, and banisters are among its wooden features that have withstood the test of time. Even with age-related signs, the furniture and décor can still be fixed without suffering permanent harm.

The durability of this home is due to Moh Mee Kasemsuwan's careful selection of high-quality materials. Her goal was to create a family home that would last for generations, not just a house.

A prime example of forward-thinking architectural design is the "Suwanwes House." Its inherent value is found in its vast collection of priceless artifacts that represent a living history and legend, not in its monetary value.

Significantly, the home featured imported ornamental elements, such as the roof's diamond-shaped regal ceramic tiles, which required expert installation. The interior walls displayed tiles that appeared to have been imported via a local agency business. The bathroom tiles featured windmills and traditional Dutch clothing, along with markings identifying the tile supplier, "Humburg-Siam Company," at the time of construction.

Moreover, during King Rama VI's reign, the bathrooms included European bidets and early flush toilets with a western design, which were regarded as groundbreaking sanitary products.

Standing as a symbol of architectural grace and cultural fusion, the "Suwanwes House" preserves historical narratives with its elegant design and timeless components, encasing a concrete image of past eras inside its walls.

Antique Furniture

Moh Mee Kasemsuwan is a man of sophisticated taste with his love of antiques. We can see from the beauty of old furniture around the House and his collection of various Chinese antique porcelains. Furthermore, he placed various Chinese ceramic flowerpots with plants and herbs in them around the House.

Another unique aspect of the architecture of "Suwanwes House" is its guest lounge with one side built in a half hexagonal shape with three windows joining together. A half-hexagonal sofa was specially built to fit into this wall highlights the uniqueness of this corner. The lounge and its unique corner were chosen to be a set for two Thai action movies - Leb Kruth (1957) and Mang- korn Daeng. In Leb Kruth, starring Luechai Narunarth and Amara Asvannanda, the room and its unique sofa were used for a fight scene between the protagonist and the villains.

Other valuable collections include mother-of-pearl inlay furniture such as a tea-table set, a bench with armrests, and a four-poster bed with a net. One interesting item is a round wooden dining table with an inner circle turntable made from marble to be used as a Lazy Susan. There are two buttons in the base which can be controlled by pressing a foot to rotate the Lazy Susan.

One valuable and antique collection that is a great inheritance from Moh Mee to his descendants is King Rama V period seven Chakri porcelain tea sets which were coloured to be used according to each day of the week.

Peep Hole

An application of western-styled architecture into the building of "Suwanwes House" can be seen from the existence of a peep hole. A sizable hole was drilled into a wall and colored glass was put in place to let the light in, but it's true purpose is to let the people in the house see visitors before going out to greet them.

Air raid bomb shelter

During World War II, two air raid bomb shelters were made in the front yard of the House. Workers dug deep holes into the ground and poured cement to coat it to provide a strong holding. There was one shelter that could take up to ten persons. For a smaller shelter, it was built in the shape of a gourd because its entrance was narrower than the bottom. This is the one that has been preserved by the owners. Up to five persons could hide in the small shelter by squeezing themselves inside. Builders also made compartments for storing containers of drinking water for a long-term stay. One caveat is that people had to enter this shelter one by one at a time owing to its narrow opening and had to sit very tightly together.

Badminton Court

While children played soccer as a family recreational activity, they also had a badminton court available for family playgrounds and exercise together.

The children of Moh Mee and acquaintances within the family circle called the place "Kasemsuwan Badminton Court". By playing sports and doing other activities together regularly, these children had built a strong foundation for unity among family members, sportsmanship and generosity. These are values Moh Mee had instilled in his children since they were young, and those values also have bound all generations of the Kasemsuwan family together.

The Kasemsuwan Badminton Court had the honor to welcome many national teams which came to play in Thailand such as the Danish sportsman Erland Kops, the Singapore National Team, and the Malaysia National Team. Players from the Thai National Team such as Mr. Charoen Wattanasin and Mr. Thanu Khachadphai also played here. The reason Kasemsuwan Badminton Court was popular at the time was because 50 years ago badminton was still known by a small group of Thais. The government also did not start building any public courts. To play badminton, players needed to go to only private courts.

Within the large compound of the "Suwanwes House" built by Moh Mee Kasemsuwan, a strong foundation of bonds was found fostering the children and their children to grow up tightly knitted within the loving ties of the same family. This shared sense of a close family has become a key element that enables the next generations to continue to produce the herbal medicine of Moh Mee formula with the same highest quality for over a century.

One essential element in helping Moh Mee's descendants to carry on his legacy is the pride of being heirs to such a visionary and very capable man who was the strong pillar of the Kasemsuwan family. He is the man who founded a solid future for all his children to inherit his thoughts, his visions, and all the business success factors for the continued success of the brand "Moh Mee". From the first day of the Moh Mee business, his children are proud to inherit and learn to continue his visions and aspirations.
