In India, there is a great deal of religious tolerance. Participation in each other's festivals has helped maintain its secular legitimacy and brought the population closer together. Festivals in India are celebrated for a wide variety of reasons. As the seasons change, the rains arrive, and the moon is full, some of these rituals are celebrated. Others are commemorated on the anniversaries of the births of religious leaders, saints, and gurus. Most of these celebrations are held all over India, but under different names. Traditional prayers or rituals, asking for blessings, making new acquaintances, decorating the home, buying new clothes, dancing, and feasting are all part of the festivities.
