ภาษาไอริช

ภาษาไอริช หรือ ภาษาไอร์แลนด์ (Gaeilge) บางครั้งเรียกว่าภาษาเกลิก () หรือไอริชเกลิกเป็นภาษากอยเดลภาษาหนึ่งที่จัดอยู่ในตระกูลภาษาอินโด-ยูโรเปียน มีรากฐานจากประเทศไอร์แลนด์ ซึ่งในอดีตมีการพูดโดยคนเชื้อสายไอริช แต่ปัจจุบันประชากรไอริชมักพูดภาษาอังกฤษ ทำให้มีจำนวนประชากรที่พูดภาษาไอริชเป็นภาษาแม่อยู่เป็นจำนวนน้อยเท่านั้น โดยการสำรวจในปี ค.ศ. 2016 พบว่ามีผู้ที่พูดภาษาไอริชเป็นภาษาแม่อยู่ในไอร์แลนด์เพียง 73,800 คน หรือ ไม่ถึงร้อยละ 2 ของจำนวนประชากร ในขณะที่คนไอริชส่วนใหญ่จะเรียนภาษาไอริชเป็นภาษาที่สอง อย่างไรก็ดีไอริชมีฐานะเป็นภาษาทางการในประเทศไอร์แลนด์ กำหนดโดยรัฐธรรมนูญของไอร์แลนด์ นอกจากนี้ยังเป็นภาษาที่ใช้อย่างเป็นทางการของl และ ในไอร์แลนด์เหนือของสหราชอาณาจักรอีกด้วย

ประวัติศาสตร์

ภาษาเขียนของไอริชถูกพบเป็นครั้งแรกในจารึกอักษรโอคัมซึ่งถูกจารึกไว้ราวศตวรรษที่ 4 โดยเป็นภาษาไอริชสมัยแรกเริ่ม (pภาษาไอริชแรกเริ่มพัฒนากลายมาเป็นภาษาไอริชเก่า ในระหว่างศตวรรษที่ 5 พอถึงศตวรรษที่ 6 ภาษาไอริชเก่าก็เริ่มใช้ตัวอักษรลาตินแล้ว และเริ่มปรากฏอยู่ในส่วนคำอรรถาธิบายบริเวณขอบหน้ากระดาษ ของต้นฉบับตัวเขียนภาษาลาติน ในระยะนี้เองคำจากภาษาละตินได้เข้ามาสู่ภาษาไอริช โดยผ่านเข้ามาทางภาษาเวลส์เก่า โดยเฉพาะคำศัพท์ที่เกี่ยวกับกิจการ และฐานานุกรมของสงฆ์
