กังหันลมผลิตไฟฟ้า คือเครื่องจักรกลอย่างหนึ่งที่สามารถรับและแปลงพลังงานจลน์จากการเคลื่อนที่ของลมให้เป็นพลังงานกลได้ และนำพลังงานกลมาใช้เพื่อสูบน้ำโดยตรงหรือผลิตเป็นพลังงานไฟฟ้า การพัฒนากังหันลมเพื่อนำมาใช้ประโยชน์เริ่มมีมาตั้งแต่สมัยอียิปต์โบราณจนถึงยุคปัจจุบัน โดยการออกแบบกังหันลมต้องอาศัยความรู้ทางด้านพลศาสตร์ของลมและหลักวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ในแขนงต่าง ๆ เพื่อให้ได้กำลังงาน พลังงาน และประสิทธิภาพสูงสุด

กังหันลมสามารถแบ่งออกตามลักษณะการจัดวางแกนของใบพัดได้เป็น 2 รูปแบบ คือ
- กังหันลมแนวแกนตั้ง (Vertical Axis Turbine (VAWT)) เป็นกังหันลมที่มีแกนหมุนและใบพัดตั้งฉากกับการเคลื่อนที่ของลมในแนวราบ
- กังหันลมแนวแกนนอน (Horizontal Axis Turbine (HAWT)) เป็นกังหันลมที่มีแกนหมุนขนานกับการเคลื่อนที่ของลมในแนวราบ โดยมีใบพัดเป็นตัวตั้งฉากรับแรงลม

- กังหันลมเพื่อสูบน้ำ (Wind Turbine for Pumping) เป็นกังหันลมที่รับพลังงานจลน์จากการเคลื่อนที่ของลมและเปลี่ยนให้เป็นพลังงานกลเพื่อใช้ในการชักหรือสูบน้ำจากที่ต่ำขึ้นที่สูงเพื่อใช้ในการเกษตร การทำนาเกลือ การอุปโภคและการบริโภค ปัจจุบันมีใช้อยู่ด้วยกัน 2 แบบ คือ แบบระหัดและแบบสูบชัก
- กังหันลมเพื่อผลิตไฟฟ้า (Wind Turbine for Electric) เป็นกังหันลมที่รับพลังงานจลน์จากการเคลื่อนที่ของลมและเปลี่ยนให้เป็นพลังงานกล จากนั้นนำพลังงานกลมาผลิตเป็นพลังงานไฟฟ้า ปัจจุบันมีการนำมาใช้งานทั้ง กังหันลมขนาดเล็ก (Small Wind Turbine) และกังหันลมขนาดใหญ่ (Large Wind Turbine)
