เศรษฐศาสตร์พฤติกรรม[1] (อังกฤษ: Behavioral economics) และสาขาที่เกี่ยวข้องกันคือ การเงินพฤติกรรม (อังกฤษ: behavioral finance) เป็นสาขาวิชาการที่ศึกษา[2]

  • ผลขององค์ประกอบต่าง ๆ ทางจิตวิทยา ทางสังคม ทางประชาน และทางอารมณ์ ต่อการตัดสินใจทางเศรษฐกิจ ของทั้งระดับบุคคลและสถาบัน
  • และผลที่เกิดขึ้นจากองค์ต่าง ๆ เหล่านั้นต่อราคาตลาด ผลกำไร และการจัดสรรทรัพยากรทางเศรษฐกิจ

เศรษฐศาสตร์พฤติกรรมพุ่งความสนใจไปที่การตัดสินใจด้วยเหตุผลที่มีความจำกัด ขององค์กรและบุคคล แบบจำลองพฤติกรรมที่ใช้ในสาขาจะรวมความรู้ความเข้าใจจากสาขาวิชาการต่าง ๆ รวมทั้งจิตวิทยา ประสาทวิทยาศาสตร์ และเศรษฐศาสตร์จุลภาค[3][4] บางครั้งจะมีการกล่าวถึงเศรษฐศาสตร์พฤติกรรมว่า เป็นทางเลือกของ neoclassical economics สิ่งที่เศรษฐศาสตร์พฤติกรรมศึกษารวมทั้งการตัดสินใจทางตลาด และกลไกที่ขับเคลื่อนการเลือกผลิตโภคภัณฑ์เพื่อมหาชน (public choice) การใช้คำว่า "เศรษฐศาสตร์พฤติกรรม" ในเอกสารวิชาการในประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกาได้เพิ่มขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ ในช่วง 2-3 ปีที่ผ่านมา[5] ส่วนบทความ "Prospect Theory: An Analysis of Decision under Risk (ทฤษฎีความคาดหวัง: การวิเคราะห์การตัดสินใจภายใต้ความเสี่ยง)" (ค.ศ. 1979) ของคาฮ์นะมันและทเวอร์สกี้[6] เป็น "บทความตั้งต้นของสาขาเศรษฐศาสตร์พฤติกรรม"[7]

  • ฮิวริสติกที่ใช้ในการประเมินและการตัดสินใจ คือ เรามักจะทำการตัดสินใจโดยใช้กฎที่ง่าย ๆ ซึ่งไม่ใช่วิธีการคิดโดยเหตุผลที่สมบูรณ์
  • Framing คือ เรื่องราวต่าง ๆ (anecdote) และการเหมารวม (stereotype) แบบต่าง ๆ ซึ่งเราใช้เป็นตัวกรองทางอารมณ์เพื่อทำความเข้าใจและตอบสนองต่อเหตุการณ์ต่าง ๆ ที่เกิดขึ้น
  • วิกลภาพทางตลาด (Market anomaly) รวมทั้งความผิดปกติของกลไกของราคาที่มีผลต่ออุปสงค์และอุปทาน และการตัดสินใจที่ไม่เป็นไปตามเหตุผล
