นกพิราบ (อังกฤษ: Rock Pigeon หรือ Rock Dove) เป็นนกในวงศ์นกเขา[3] โดยปกติคำว่า"นกพิราบ"จะหมายถึงนกพิราบเลี้ยง (รวมถึงนกพิราบแฟนซีด้วย) ส่วนนกพิราบนกเหนือจากนี้จะเรียกนกพิราบป่า[4]
นกพิราบป่ามีขนสีเทาอ่อน มีแถบสีดำสองแถบบนปีกแต่ละข้าง แต่ทั้งนกป่าและนกเลี้ยงนั้นมีความหลากหลายของสีและรูปแบบของขนเป็นอย่างมาก มีความแตกต่างระหว่างเพศเล็กน้อย[5] นกชนิดนี้มักมีคู่ครองตัวเดียว มีลูกครั้งละ 2 ตัว พ่อและแม่ช่วยกันเลี้ยงดู[6]
นกพิราบมีถิ่นอาศัยในสิ่งแวดล้อมเปิดและกึ่งเปิดในพื้นที่เกษตรกรรมและในเมือง หน้าผาและขอบหินถูกใช้เป็นที่ทำรังวางไข่ของนกในป่า นกพิราบมีถิ่นกำเนิดในยุโรป แอฟริกาเหนือ และทางตะวันตกของเอเชีย ก่อนที่จะแพร่กระจายไปตามเมืองต่างๆทั่วโลก คาดว่ามีประชากรนกในธรรมชาติประมาณ 17 - 28 ล้านตัวในยุโรป[1]
