The Ko-Lek Boat[แก้]

The "Ko-Lek" boat, also known as "Ruea Yoakong," is a vital part of Narathiwat province's heritage, used for fishing since ancient times. In 2518 B.E. (1975 AD), the tradition of Ko-Lek boat racing was revived, becoming an annual event on September 25th. This celebration includes races and cultural festivities, highlighting the rich heritage of the region and symbolizing community resilience and pride.

History[แก้]

The "Ko-Lek" boat, believed to have originated before the Sukhothai era, holds significant cultural and historical importance in Thailand's southern regions, especially in Pattani and Narathiwat provinces, where Islam has a strong presence. The term "Ko-Lek" is derived from the Malay word "Ko-Le," meaning "drift" or "float," reflecting its close association with Muslim fishermen along the border areas. These boats are not only functional for fishing but also serve as cultural symbols, showcasing the traditional craftsmanship of the region. Crafted with intricate patterns and vibrant colors, each Ko-Lek boat is unique and often displays region-specific designs. Skilled artisans inherit their expertise from previous generations or undergo training from experienced mentors to create these elaborate patterns, which commonly feature mythical animals and motifs inspired by local folklore. Drawing patterns on the Ko-Lek boat is not merely about aesthetics; it also carries cultural and spiritual significance. For instance, patterns like "Sing Hoo Phak See" (a lion holding a fish) are believed to bring good luck and protection to the boat during sea voyages. Additionally, there are specific rituals associated with the Ko-Lek boat, such as removing shoes before setting sail and avoiding certain behaviors near the boat's head, believed to house a sacred or divine presence known as the "Sing Sathit" (Spirit of the Boat). In essence, the Ko-Lek boat represents more than just a vessel for fishing; it embodies centuries-old traditions, artistic expression, and spiritual beliefs deeply ingrained in the lives of southern Thai fishing communities.

Propulsion[แก้]

There are several methods and techniques of driving a boat that can be used:

Using paddles: The basic way to drive a boat is by using paddles. The driver uses a pair of jigs to propel the boat forward. Using a paddle requires both arm and body strength to move the boat forward. The hand in front will be the paddle pole. and the hand behind will be the tail pole. Adjusting the stern and oars in the desired direction is important for controlling the boat's direction. Body Energy Utilization: Another important technique is the use of body energy to propel the boat. Male athletes with large waists and strong torsos often use their torsos to row for maximum power. By rotating the body while paddling Using more of the body allows for more efficient piloting and reduces arm energy use.

Orientation: To make the ship move in the desired direction. Drivers will use techniques such as using paddles on the side of the boat to intentionally make the boat turn in the desired direction. Or using the rear oars to make the boat turn in the desired direction. Orientation requires precise technique to instantly turn the boat in the desired direction.

Balance: Balance is important in piloting a boat. This is because the boat has a long and narrow structure. Good balance helps the rider control the boat efficiently and safely. To maintain balance Should be moved slowly. and use the body to adjust the direction of the boat
