ภาษาแฆแลจ เ็นภาษากลุ่มเตอร์กิกที่มีผู้พูดในประเทศอิหร่าน ถึงแม้ว่าจะยังคงมีคุณสมบัติภาษาเตอร์กิกเก่า แต่มันถูกแปลงเป็นเปอร์เซียแล้ว[6][7] ใน ค.ศ. 1978 มีผู้พูดภาษานี้ 20,000 คนใน 50 หมู่บ้านทางตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ของเตหะราน[3] แต่จำนวนนี้ลดลงถึงประมาณ 19,000 คน[1] โดยมีประมาณ 150 คำที่ไม่ทราบต้นกำเนิด[8] จากการสำรวจพบว่า พ่อแม่ชาวแฆแลจส่วนใหญ่เลือกที่จะไม่ส่งต่อภาษาของตนแก่ลูก ๆ โดยมีผู้ส่งต่อภาษานี้เพียง 5 ใน 1000 ครัวเรือน[1]

ภาษาแฆแลจเป็นภาษาที่สืบจากภาษาเตอร์กิกเก่าที่มีชื่อว่า Arghu[2][9] มะห์มูด อัลกาชเฆาะรี นักพจนานุกรมภาษาเตอร์กิกในคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 11 เป็นบุคคลแรกที่ให้ตัวอย่างจากภาษาแฆแลจ ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่สอดคล้องกับภาษาแฆแลจในปัจจุบัน[7]

Gerhard Doerfer ผู้ค้นพบภาษาแฆแลจอีกครั้ง ได้พิสูจน์ว่าภาษานี้เป็นภาษาแรกที่แยกตัวออกจากภาษากลุ่มเตอร์กิกทั่วไป[9]
