Timpani's timbre is determined primarily by the modes of vibration of a stretched membrane and secondarily by the shape of the body. Timpani bodies are shaped such that they are pitched percussion, with the perceived pitch determined by modes being modified to either be close to theoretical harmonics of the perceived pitch or quiet.Howard, David M.
