The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite captured this natural-color image of Super Typhoon Soulik on the morning of July 10, 2013 at 02:05AMUTC. At that time the storm had 1 minute sustained winds of 235km/h(JTWC)and a central pressure of 925hpa(JMA, and was at peak intensity. The storm lacked a outer field of convection, and has characteristics of an annular typhoon. The eye was measured to be about 80 kilometers across at that time, which was surrounded by a thick ring of convection of thunderstorms. Soulik originated from a Upper level, cold-core low that developed on June 28 near the International Date Line in the Central north Pacific. The Upper Level low eventually caused so much lower level thunderstorms to form, that the convection became tightly packed, and started to develop a mid-level low pressure area, which continue to spiral downwards where it rapidly developed. |
