Mansoura[1] (Al Manṣūra, IPA: [el.mɑnˈsˤuːɾɑ], rural: [el.mænˈsˤuːɾe]) is a city in Egypt, with a population of 960,423.[2] It is the capital of the Dakahlia Governorate.

Etymology

Mansoura in Arabic means "victorious". The city is named after the Egyptian victory at the El Mansoura Battle over Louis IX of France during the Seventh Crusade.

History

Mansoura was established in 1219 by al-Kamil of the Ayyubid dynasty upon a Phatmetic branch of the Nile on a place of several older villages like Al-Bishtamir (อาหรับ: البشطمير) and Kafr al-Badamas (อาหรับ: كفر البدماص).[3] After the Egyptians defeated the Crusaders during the Seventh Crusade, it was named Mansoura (aka. "The Victorious").

In the Seventh Crusade, the Capetians were defeated and put to flight; between fifteen and thirty thousand of their men fell on the battlefield. Louis IX of France was captured in the main Battle of Mansoura, and confined in the house of Ibrahim Ibn Lokman, secretary of the sultan, and under the guard of the eunuch Sobih. The king's brother was imprisoned in the same house. The sultan provided for their sustenance. The house of Ibrahim Ibn Lokman is now the only museum in Mansoura. It is open to the public and houses articles that used to belong to the French monarch, including his personal thirteenth century toilet.[4]

The Mansura Air Battle[5][6] on October 14, 1973 occurred during the Yom Kippur War. Israeli Air Force fighters attacking Egyptian air bases were intercepted by the Egyptian Air Force. On that day, 160 jet fighters, most belonging to Israel, battled for 53 minutes over Mansoura. Egyptian army claims that despite the numerical and qualitative superiority of the Israeli warplanes, 17 Israeli planes were downed. (2 according to the Israelis). The rest retreated.[7][8][9] Egypt announced the loss of six planes, only three of which fell to Israeli fire. The Egyptian government subsequently changed the country's "Air Force Day" from November 2 to October 14, to commemorate the Mansoura Air Battle.[6]

แฟแรแวแฮร์ (เปอร์เซีย: فَرَوَهَر) มีอีกชื่อว่า โฟโรว์แฮร์ (فُروهَر) หรือ แฟร์เรคียอนี (فَرِّ کیانی) เป็นหนึ่งในสัญลักษณ์ที่เป็นที่รู้จักมากที่สุดของศาสนาโซโรอัสเตอร์ ศาสนาอิหร่านที่กลุ่มชนอิหร่านส่วนใหญ่เคยนับถือก่อนที่มุสลิมพิชิตจักรวรรดิเปอร์เซียในคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 7 ซึ่งนำไปสู่การล่มสลายของจักรวรรดิซาเซเนียนและการอพยพของชาวโซโรอัสเตอร์จำนวนมากไปที่อินเดียทันที เพื่อรักษาอัตลักษณ์ทางศาสนาและหลบหนีจากการข่มเหงของมุสลิม[1][2] There are various interpretations of what the Faravahar symbolizes, and there is no concrete universal consensus on its meaning. However, it is commonly believed that the Faravahar serves as a Zoroastrian depiction of the fravashi, or personal spirit.[3][4]

The Faravahar is one of the best-known pre-Islamic symbols of Iran and is often worn as a pendant among the various Iranian peoples throughout Western and Southern Asia. Despite its traditionally religious nature, it has become a secular and cultural symbol, often representing a pan-Iranian nationalist identity.[5][6][7]

Etymology

The New Persian word فروهر is read as forouhar or faravahar (pronounced as furōhar/furūhar in Classical Persian). The Middle Persian forms were frawahr (Book Pahlavi: plwʾhl, Manichaean: prwhr), frōhar (recorded in Pazend as 𐬟𐬭𐬋𐬵𐬀𐬭; it is a later form of the previous form), and fraward (Book Pahlavi: plwlt', Manichaean: frwrd), which was directly from Old Persian *fravarti-.[3][8] The Avestan language form was fravaṣ̌i (𐬟𐬭𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬴𐬌).
