เอโมจิมีต้นกำเนิดมาจากโทรศัพท์เคลื่อนที่ของญี่ปุ่นในปี พ.ศ. 2542 โดยนายชิเกทากะ คุริตะ ผู้มีอาชีพนักออกแบบของบริษัทผู้ให้บริการโทรศัพท์แห่งหนึ่งโทรศัพท์ในญี่ปุ่นเพื่อช่วยให้การสื่อสารทางโทรศัพท์มือถือนั้นง่ายขึ้น ซึ่งในครั้งนั้นเขาได้คิดค้น เอโมจิ รวมทั้งหมด 176 แบบด้วยกัน [4]
