ประวัติ

จุดเหนือศูนย์เกิดแผ่นดินไหวในเหตุ Great Kantō earthquake เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2466 อยู่ลึกใต้เกาะ Izu Ōshima ใน Sagami Bay ส่งผลให้โตเกียว เมืองท่าโยะโกะฮะมะ รวมทั้งจังหวัดโดยรอบทั้ง Chiba คะนะงะวะ และ Shizuoka ถูกทำลายราบ และความเสียหายยังแผ่ขยายไปทั่วภูมิภาคคันโต[1] เนื่องจากพื้นดินใต้ทะเลทางตอนเหนือของอ่าวค่อนข้างตื้น และ the funnelling effect of tsunami and typhoon wave energy จึงสร้างความเสียหายอย่างหนักบนพื้นที่ Shonan coast รวมทั้ง Kotokuin temple (高徳院 こうとくいん) ที่เป็นที่ตั้งของ Great Buddha หรือ Daibutsu (大仏 だいぶつ) ในช่วงที่เกิด massive tsunami เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2041[2]

Natural environment

A branch of the warm Kuroshio (Black Current) warms the bay, allowing it to host marine organisms typical of more southerly regions and giving a mild climate to the land bordering the bay. The maximum depth of the bay is about 1500 meters.

Organisms from sub-arctic regions are also advected into the bay by intrusions of the Oyashio Current resulting in a very high [biodiversity].[3] It is the major study site for research programs at the University of Tokyo (ORI) and the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC).

In 2004, soil samples from the bay were found to contain radioactive contamination from the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests that took place from 1946 to 1958. [4]
