ประเพณีมุขปาฐะ เป็นรูปแบบการสื่อสารของมนุษย์ในเรื่องความรู้ ศิลปะ แนวคิด และวัฒนธรรมที่มีการได้รับ รักษา และส่งผ่านจากรุ่นสู่รุ่น[1][2][3] การสื่อสารอมักใช้วิธีการพูดหรือเพลงและอาจรวมคติชน บัลลาด เพลงสวด ร้อยแก้ว หรือกวีนิพนธ์ ด้วยวิธีเหล่านี้ จึงมีความเป็นไปได้ที่สังคมจะส่งประวัติศาสตร์มุขปาฐะ วรรณกรรมมุขปาฐะ กฎหมายมุขปาฐะ และความรู้อื่น ๆ จากรุ่นสู่รุ่นโดยไม่ใช้ระบบการเขียนหรือรูปแบบอื่นที่คล้ายกัน ศาสนาอย่างศาสนาพุทธ ศาสนาฮินดู คริสต์นิกายโรมันคาทอลิก[4] และศาสนาเชน ใช้วิธีประเพณีมุขปาฐะ เพื่อส่งต่อคัมภีร์ พิธี เพลงสดุดี และเทพปกรณัมจากรุ่นสู่รุ่น[5][6][7]
