ในกายวิภาคมนุษย์ ข้อมือ (wrist) มีคำจำกัดความที่แตกต่างกันดังนี้
- กระดูกข้อมือ (Carpus หรือ Carpal bones): กระดูกแปดชิ้น ประกอบเป็นส่วนโครงกระดูกส่วนต้นของมือ[1][2]
- ข้อต่อข้อมือ (Wrist joint หรือ Radiocarpal joint): ข้อต่อระหว่างกระดูกเรเดียสและกระดูกข้อมือ[2]
- บริเวณข้อมือ พื้นที่โดยรอบกระดูกข้อมือ ซึ่งรวมไปถึงส่วนปลายของกระดูกปลายแขน และส่วนต้นของ กระดูกฝ่ามือ (Metacarpus) ห้าชิ้น และข้อต่อต่าง ๆ ในบริเวณนี้ที่เรียกรวมกันว่าข้อต่อข้อมือ (Wrist joints)[3][4] บริเวณนี้ยังรวมถึงอุโมงค์ข้อมือ (Carpal tunnel), ร่องนิ้วโป้งทางกายวิภาค (Anatomical snuff box), เส้นรอยพับข้อมือ (Bracelet lines), แผ่นพังผืดรัดเอ็นกล้ามเนื้อด้านหน้า (Flexor retinaculum) และแผ่นพังผืดรัดเอ็นกล้ามเนื้อด้านหลัง (Extensor retinaculum)จากคำจำกัดความที่หลากหลายนี้ ส่งผลให้การแตกหักของกลุ่มกระดูกข้อมือ (carpal bones) ถูกเรียกว่า "กระดูกข้อมือหัก" (Carpal fractures) ในขณะที่การหักของกระดูกส่วนอื่น เช่น "กระดูกปลายแขนท่อนนอกส่วนปลายหัก" (Distal radius fracture) ก็มักจะถูกจัดอยู่ในกลุ่มอาการกระดูกข้อมือหักด้วยเช่นกัน

The wrist joint is composed of not only the radiocarpal and distal radioulnar joints but also the intercarpal articulations.
