| คำอธิบาย | A selfie by the Japan built steam engine plinthed at Saiyok Noi waterfall near Kanchanaburi, Thailand. This engine was one of those used in construction of the infamous Death Railway by the Japanese during WW-II through dense jungle and inhospitable terrain. Over one hundred thousand men, mostly POWs and labourers, perished from disease, accidents, undernousirhment and ill treatment by the Japanese. After the war, as a mark of respect for the dead, both Thailand and Burma decided to dismantle 15km of track from the border in their respective territories, due to which there is no longer a train link between Thailand and Burma. The Death Railway passed by the Saiyok Noi waterfall, but this is part of the dismantled line. Not that I want to pose with a stupid smile next to a machine that was used in rather deadly enterprise, but I couldn't help but linger by the engine for a while due to my love for trains. A passing tourist offered to take my selfie beside the machine, so I thought why not, what the hell. The locomotive is a State Railway of Thailand. (SRT) engine no. 702 built by Japan. Known there as JNR class 56, this was a real workhorse in it's home country and was built in numbers. Several of them were sent overseas to countries like Burma and Thailand for use during WW-II. Once the war got over, the engines remained in the country they were sent to and served there till the end of their service lives. (Kanchanaburi, Thailand, Oct. 2008) |
