ไชยรัตน์ เจริญสินโอฬาร เป็นรองศาสตราจารย์ประจำสาขาการเมืองการปกครอง คณะรัฐศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ อดีตผู้อำนวยการโครงการปริญญาเอก คณะรัฐศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ และนักเขียนประจำนิตยสารวิภาษาเป็นนักวิชาการด้านการเมืองภาคประชาชนและเป็นหนึ่งในผู้บุกเบิกและผู้เชี่ยวชาญด้านทฤษฎีหลังสมัยใหม่ สัญวิทยา และหลังโครงสร้างนิยม ในวงวิชาการของประเทศไทย ที่ควบคู่ไปกับ นพพร ประชากุล และธเนศ วงศ์ยานนาวา เป็นต้น งานเขียนของไชยรัตน์ในเรื่องดังกล่าวจัดเป็นงานเขียนภาษาไทยที่บุกเบิกและสำคัญต่อทฤษฎีหลังสมัยใหม่ โดยเฉพาะหนังสือชื่อ "วาทกรรมการพัฒนา" ที่เป็นงานเขียนชิ้นสำคัญที่นำทฤษฎีกลุ่มหลังสมัยใหม่ของนักคิดสกุลฝรั่งเศสอย่าง มิเชล ฟูโกต์ มาใช้อธิบายการพัฒนาในกลุ่มประเทศโลกที่สาม เป็นต้น จัดเป็นงานเขียนยุคแรก ๆ ของการศึกษาแนวคิดหลังสมัยใหม่ในประเทศไทย หนังสือดังกล่าวได้ถูกนำไปใช้เป็นตำราในการเรียนการสอนในระดับบัณฑิตศึกษาหลาย ๆ สาขาในประเทศไทยและถูกนำไปใช้อ้างอิงในวงวิชาการของไทยอยู่มาก ซึ่งมีอิทธิพลต่อการศึกษาทางด้านรัฐศาสตร์ ปรัชญา วรรณกรรม สังคมวิทยา มานุษยวิทยา ประวัติศาสตร์ สังคมสงเคราะห์ศาสตร์ ฯลฯ และมีอิทธิพลต่อความคิดนักวิชาการหัวก้าวหน้าหลายท่าน เช่น ยุกติ มุกดาวิจิตร, บัณฑิต จันทร์โรจนกิจ, จันทนี เจริญศรี เป็นต้น

ครอบครัว

ปัจจุบันสมรสกับนางนพวรรณ เจริญสินโอฬาร มีบุตรคือนายรอยต่อ เจริญสินโอฬาร

ประวัติ

จบการศึกษาจากคณะรัฐศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ (สิงห์แดงรุ่น 20) ซึ่งมีร่วมรุ่นที่มีชื่อเสียงทั้งในวงวิชาการและการเมืองหลายคน เช่น ธเนศ อาภรณ์สุวรรณ, ขจิต จิตเสวี, เสกสรรค์ ประเสริฐกุล, ไพโรจน์ สุวรรณฉวี, วิวัฒน์ เอี่ยมไพรวัลย์ เป็นต้น เมื่อจบการศึกษาได้ไปรับราชการเป็นปลัดอำเภอ ที่อำเภอสารภี จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ และต่อมาได้ลาศึกษาต่อในระดับปริญญาโทการเมืองเปรียบเทียบที่ มหาวิทยาลัยแคนซัส สหรัฐอเมริกา ในปีพ.ศ. 2519 ทำวิทยานิพนธ์เกี่ยวกับเหตุการณ์ 14 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2516 และไปศึกษาปริญญาเอกรัฐศาสตร์ที่ University of Hawaii at Manoa และสำเร็จการศึกษาในปี พ.ศ. 2528 และกลับมาเป็นอาจารย์ประจำสาขาการเมืองการปกครอง คณะรัฐศาสตร์ มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์ในเวลาต่อมา จนได้รับทุน Post-doctoral fellow ที่มหาวิทยาลัยเยล ซึ่งทำให้ไชยรัตน์ได้รับการศึกษาในแนวคิดทฤษฎีหลังสมัยใหม่ที่แพร่หลายมากในมหาวิทยาลัยแห่งนั้นและได้ส่งผลต่องานเขียนของไชยรัตน์ในเวลาต่อมา
