เปศวาร์ (ปาทาน: پېښور; Hindko: پشور; อูรดู: پشاور [pɪˈʃɑːʋər] ( ฟังเสียง)) เป็นเมืองใหญ่อันดับ 6 ของประเทศปากีสถานที่มีประชากรมากกว่า 2.3 ล้านคน ตั้งอยู่ทางตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือของประเทศในหุบเขาเปศวาร์ โดยเป็นเมืองหลักของแคว้นแคบาร์ปัคตูนควา]และเป็นเมืองใหญ่สุดของแคว้น[9] เปศวาร์มีประชากรโดยหลักเป็นชาวปาทาน ซึ่งเป็นกลุ่มชาติพันธุ์ที่มีมากเป็นอันดับ 2 ของประเทศ[10][11] เปศวาร์ตั้งอยู่ในหุบเขาเปศวาร์ ใกล้กับปลายทางตะวันออกของทางผ่านแคบาร์ ใกล้กับพรมแดนดูรันด์ ประวัติศาสตร์จารึกเมืองเปศวาร์ตั้งแต่อย่างน้อย 539 ปีก่อนคริสต์ศักราช ทำให้เป็นหนึ่งในเมืองที่เก่าแก่ที่สุดในเอเชียใต้[12] เปศวาร์ยังเป็นหนึ่งในที่อยู่อาศัยที่มีผู้อยู่อาศัยต่อเนื่องที่เก่าแก่สุดของประเทศ[13]

มีการกล่าวถึงพื้นที่ที่ครอบคลุมเปศวาร์ในปัจจุบันในบรรดาคัมภีร์เวท (Vedic scriptures) เมืองนี้เป็นหนึ่งในเมืองหลักของแคว้นคันธาระ เคยเป็นเมืองหลวงของจักรวรรดิกุษาณะในรัชสมัยพระเจ้ากนิษกะ[14][15][16] และเป็นที่ตั้งของกนิษกะสถูป ซึ่งเป็นหนึ่งในอาคารที่สูงที่สุดในโลกสมัยโบราณ[17]

ชื่อนคร "เปศวาร์" ในสมัยใหม่น่าจะมาจากศัพท์สันสกฤต [ที่สร้างใหม่] ว่า "Purushapura" (สันสกฤต: पुरूषपुर Puruṣapura, หมายถึง "บุรุษนคร")[18][19][20] ชื่อนี้มาจากการตั้งชื่อเมืองโดยจักรพรรดิอักบัรแห่งโมกุลจากชื่อเก่าว่า Parashawar ซึ่งมีความหมายที่พระองค์ไม่ทรงพระทัย[21][22] ผู้ปกครองนครในช่วงก่อตั้งอาจเป็นราชาฮินดูนาม Purush คำว่า ปูร์ ในภาษาสันสฤกตหมายถึง "นคร"[23][24][25] โดยภาษาสันสกฤตในอักษรขโรษฐีเคยเป็นภาษาหนังสือในอาณาจักรพุทธที่ปกครองพื้นที่ในช่วงที่มีการบันทึกช่วงแรก[26] ชื่อนครอาจมาจากชื่อภาษาสันสกฤตของ "บุปผานคร" (Poshapura) ซึ่งเป็นชื่อที่พบในจารึกอักษรขโรษฐีโบราณที่อาจกล่าวถึงเปศวาร์[27]

บันทึกในคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 7 ของพระสงฆ์ชาวจีนนามพระถังซัมจั๋ง กล่าวถึงนครในคันธาระที่มีชื่อว่า Po-la-sha-pu-lo (จีน: 布路沙布邏; พินอิน: bùlùshābùló) และบันทึกของฝ่าเสียนในคริสต์ศตวรรษที่ 5 กล่าวถึงเมืองนี้ด้วยชื่อ Fou-lou-sha (จีน: 弗樓沙; พินอิน: fùlóshā) ทั้งสองเป็นชื่อ Purushapura ในแบบภาษาจีน[28][29] จารึกสมัยโบราณในสมัยชาปูร์ระบุนครในหุบเขาคันธาระด้วยชื่อ pskbvr ซึ่งอาจสื่อถึงเปศวาร์[30]
