สัญรูปอารมณ์ หรือที่นิยมทับศัพท์ อีโมติคอน หรือ เอโมติคอน (อังกฤษ: emoticon; /ɪˈmtɪkɒn/, ə-moh-tə-kon, น้อยมากที่ออกเสียง /ɪˈmɒtɪkɒn/),[1][2][3][4] เป็นคำย่อมาจาก "emotion icon" (สัญรูปอารมณ์)[5] หรือเรียกสั้น ๆ ว่า อีโมท (emote) เป็นสัญรูปแสดงการแสดงออกของใบหน้า ผ่านการใช้ตัวอักษรเพื่อแสดงอารมณ์ ความรู้สึก

เอโมติคอนยุคแรกเป็นบรรพชนของเอโมจิ เอโมติคอนแรกของ ASCII คือ :-) และ :-( เขียนขึ้นครั้งแรกโดยสก็อต ฟอลแมนในปี 1982 แต่ความจริงแล้วเอโมติคอนแรกมีต้นกำเนิดมาจากระบบคอมพิวเตอร์เพลโต IV ในปี 1972[6]

ผู้ใช้จากญี่ปุ่นเป็นผู้สร้างความนิยมให้กับรูปแบบเอโมติคอนที่เรียกว่า คาโอโมจิ (kaomoji) ซึ่งใช้งานอักษรคาตากานะ รูปแบบนี้เป็นที่นิยมมากบน ASCII NET ของญี่ปุ่นตั้งแต่ปี 1986[7][8]

นับตั้งแต่ SMS และอินเทอร์เน็ตกลายมาเป็นที่นิยมใช้ไปทั่วในปลายทศวรรษ 1990s เอโมติคอนกลายมามีบทบาทและเป็นที่นิยมอย่างมาก และถูกใช้ทั่วไปในการส่งข้อความ, เว็บกระทู้ และอีเมล เอโมติคอนสร้าง "โทน" ที่แตกต่างและความรู้สึกใหม่ ๆ ที่สื่อสารผ่านตัวอักษร ท่ามกลางการสื่อสารที่มีเพียงตัวอักษรเพื่อสื่อเนื้อความเท่านั้น[9]
