วาลคิรี
ในตำนานนอร์ส วาลคิรี (อังกฤษ: valkyrie, นอร์ส: valkyrja) เป็นเทพธิดาที่รับใช้ โอดินโดยมีหน้าที่นำนักรบที่ตายในสงครามไปที่ วัลฮัลลา (Valhalla) เพื่อพบกับโอดิน และมาเป็น Einherjar สู้ศึกในสงครามแร็กนาร็อก สงครามสิ้นโลกระหว่างเทพเจ้าและปีศาจ
ในทางศิลปะ วาลคิรีมักจะถูกกล่าวถึงในสัญลักษณ์ของความสวยงาม โดยจะมีลักษณะนางฟ้าหญิง สวมหมวกนักรบถือหอกและขี่บนหลังม้าที่มีปีก วาลิรีนั้นสามารถแปลงร่างเป็นหงส์ได้ วาลคิรีนั้นสามารถแต่งงานกับมนุษย์ได้ แต่นั่นจะทำให้เสียอำนาจวิเศษของเทพธิดาไป

นิรุกติศาสตร์[แก้]
คำว่า valkyrie (วาลคิรี) มาจากภาษานอร์สโบราณ valkyrja (valkyrjur, พหูพจน์) ซึ่งประกอบด้วยคำสองคำ คำนาม valr (หมายถึง ผู้ตายในสนามรบ) และคำกิริยา kjósa (แปลว่า เลือก) เมื่อนำมารวมกันแปลว่า "ผู้คัดเลือกผู้ตาย" คำ valkyrja ในภาษานอร์สโบราณเป็นรากศัพท์ของคำ wælcyrge ในภาษาอังกฤษโบราณ[1] ชื่ออื่นของวาลคิรีประกอบด้วย óskmey ("เด็กสาวแห่งคำอวยพร", ภาษานอร์สโบราณ) ซึ่งปรากฏในบทกวี Oddrúnargrátr และ Óðins meyjar ("เด็กสาวของโอดิน", ภาษานอร์สโบราณ) ซึ่งปรากฏใน Nafnaþulur Óskmey อาจเกี่ยวข้องกับชื่อเทพโอดิน Óski (ภาษานอร์สโบราณ, แปลว่า "ผู้เติมเต็มความหวัง") ซึ่งเกี่ยวโยงถึงโอดินรับเอานักรบผู้ถูกสังหารสู่วัลฮัลลา[2]
